I recently took my DAT and am ready to submit my application. First off, let me say I had a rough childhood. I am also 30 now but in my early 20's I got in to some trouble. I want to know if the following poses any problem:

1) I was arrested for outstanding traffic violations. I went to jail and released after I paid off all the tickets. Do I have to disclose this? Is this going to show up on my background check?

2) I recently remembered I also have a bench warrant for not paying a 500 dollar speeding ticket, and that ticket is now 1300 dollars. A bench warrant was issued in a rural town because I didn't pay it off. Should I pay off the ticket? Will it show up on my background check?

How should I resolve these two issues? Thank you for helping me. I made mistakes in the past but am looking to resolve it. Any help would be appreciated.

anything from traffic tickets to felonies show up on background checks. Since no one in the pre-dent forum is on an adcom, my suggestion is to inform them of everything. They are just traffic tickets.

You need to pay off that traffic ticket and tie up any other loose ends ASAP. Disclose everything in your application. A $500 ticket? Wow, that's expensive!

Looks like your thinking hasn't changed much over the past 10 years.

I guess being a dentist allows him to judge. Anyway, I agree with the first two posters, pay it off and take care of every loose ends. You get only one chance at this.

Here is what I feel. First of all, yes, the OP should take care of his situation. He needs to pay off all tickets and fines. But, he should consult with a lawyer in this instance to see if anything can be done to minimize the overall damage to his record.

Next, the OP has a bench warrant that has not been resolved. Plus, he is asking if he should pay off the fine which he failed to show up for his court date and was the reason why a bench order was issued. For a 30 yr old to not understand that he needs to resolve legal issues, do you not think he has learned anything from his troubled youth let alone have the judgement right now that is needed to a trusted healthcare provider. I think it is this inability to see this that lead to doc toothache making his comment. Truthfully, the OP needs to change his way of thinking quickly and be able to think for himself - especially in a no brainer situation like this where it is simple - take care of your legal issues.

This is a good post.

The way I see it, if you don't have something constructive to say and add to on this forum, then don't. I don't disagree with what the dentist said, I just didn't posted it and chose not to make any snide comment. Criticism should be constructive, not condescending. He may be 30, but I don't know his situation or his background. He's asking for help and thats what I think we are here on this forum for.

Here is what I think. The internet is a very cold, callous, impersonal means of communicating. The tone or sincerity of how someone says something in person cannot be conveyed over the internet. So, when something is said the way doc toothache did, people get uptight at times. I am sorry, but people are too sensitive in today's society. If anything, when on the internet you need to be able to be less senistive to things you read. If you go back and read his comment without being so sensitive, you can actually see he actually did say something constructive. The OP made bad choices in his youth and got in trouble. He has knowingly continued to avoid at least some of punishments as a result of these bad choices. To me, this is evident that the OP has not changed his way of thinking over the time otherwise he would have already taken care of his legal issues and wouldn't require annonymous people on a website for hopeful doctors in training to help him decide what needs to be done.

I agree 100% with everything you said. When I read doc's comment, I just nodded and thought to myself-if he'd really changed, those problems would have already been handled-like you said...No brainer.
