upon acceptance, whats the background check for? is it only criminal, or do they use it to like check up on everything on your app, like all volunteer and/or research experiences??

lol I think its just criminal..
there's nothing to be afraid of...unless you...faked some something(s) in your application lol

It checks if you have ever had any parking tickets, and if you do schools know you are irresponsible and any acceptances will be revoked. Also, jaywalking is heavily frowned upon.

I think they mostly check to verify you can actually become a physician some day. If you have a drug arrest in addition to that 4.0 and 40 you cant get a medical license, so it would be a waste of their time to train you.

haha, no my app is completely legitimate, i just didnt understand what the background check was for. out of curiousity, if a sibling has been in trouble with the law, does that come up in your check?

i'm curious about this too, do you actually have to fill out a form, or is the CBC done automatically?

No, it only checks your background and no one else. Unless you've been arrested at some point in your life you're okay.

They basically go around to all your professors and people who know you and ask them if they like you.

No, but seriously, when I got a job working for the government, they did do this! Called every contact/neighbor on the list! And you had to list all of the places you have ever lived in, which becomes a lot in college! I doubt that this CBC will be that intense (unless you are applying to USUHS as you are then becoming a commissioned officer of the military...) I think this one just looks for felonies, etc.

From what I understand, I think it just looks for any felonies, misdemeanors, unresolved arrests and/or tickets in every state and county you've lived in.

If you are referring to traffic tickets, it doesn't include them. I had multiple speeding violations when I was younger and none of those came up on the results of my CBC.

You are fingerprinted and the prints are sent to the State and perhaps to the FBI to check against their databases. So, if you were ever in the sort of trouble that results in being fingerprinted (i.e. speeding tickets don't count) it will show up.

Of greatest interest are violent crimes, domestic abuse, drug trafficing, and terrorism (the VA is particularly concerned about terrorists and most medical schools have rotations at the VA Med Ctrs).

They checked my criminal background at the federal level and at the state and county level for everyplace I have ever lived.

And unless I am mistaken, I believe that I also signed an authorization for them to check my credit rating...

The background check takes about 2 or 3 days to do. It checks 5 things:

National Sex Offender Registry
County Criminal Record
Federal Criminal Record
National Criminal Database
OIG and GSA Excluded Parties

That's pretty much it. Hopefully no medical school applicant would be listed in any of these.......especially the first one.......

So I was complete with the CBC thingy about a week ago, and still havent heard anything back form the CBC people...any ideas?

Does every school you get accepted or waitlisted to do a CBC or is there just one, also when you do the CBC do they give you a copy of the report?

Hence why I said "unresolved." I'm assuming you paid them?

schools participating in the CBC on the AMCAS do it. I dunno if they do it very time you get accepted, I would think once is enough, then they take the report and send it out as need be to the schools youve been accepted to.

Yes, you get to see the report when its done. They'll email you.

I have another question about this. On Wednesday I got an email saying that a school has requested I fill one out, blah blah blah, and I would receive and email from so and so prompting me to do so. However I haven't yet received the actual email with directions as to how to fill one out. How long does this usually take?

Why would they want to check your credit rating? That seems like it could violate some privacy law.
