Background check

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No, mine came back the next day. You might wanna double check that you sent the request.

I definitely sent the request. I has been listed as "in process" and the date of submission is 1/5 on the website. This is getting out of hand.

Mine is also not processed yet. I got an email from certiphi yesterday telling me to submit 2 forms of Canadian id since I am a dual citizen and lived in Canada for a while. I guess that is what is holding things up.

You've got to be f***in' kidding me. I called certiphi and they said they sent me an email on 1/8 asking me to verify a speeding ticket.

1. I never got the email.
2. It is the only speeding ticket I've ever received in my life, a 34 in a 25, and they have it listed as a misdemeanor.

Should I be worried?

Toadsworth... I wouldnt freak out yet. I had the same thing happen and I contested the Background report with Certiphi stating that a traffic ticket is not a "misdemeanor" in the sense that most people would think. They contacted the reporting jurisdiction, and the report was edited to indicate it as a traffic violation. You should not be worried about that unless the school specifically asked about EVERYTHING including traffic tickets and you denied it when asked. Assuming that's not the case, you should be fine. From what I understand, unless you outright lied (as above), they are looking for serious crimes/flags that would prevent you from getting licensed down the road. Enjoy the acceptance!

My speeding ticket was in Ohio as well. I told Certiphi it was BS that a traffic ticket for going 11 over (56 in 45) showed up as a misdemeanor without clarification. They contacted the Hamilton County courthouse who clarified that it was a traffic misdemeanor. If it makes you feel better, I was accepted at a school that explicitly asked for things such as traffic tickets. I told them "no traffic tickets" on the application, only to get pulled over a month later. So you can imagine I was freaking out when it all the sudden appeared on the CBC. I met with the DoA at said school and he was very understanding... but he just wanted to clarify the time line of when I got the ticket vs. when I filled out the application. Do you honestly think no one on the ADCOM has ever received a speeding ticket? It's not like you were going egregiously fast either.

Oh, damn. I kind of didn't know Class C misdemeanors (which are just tickets, e.g. a speeding ticket) would show up on a background check. Is this the same in every state?

That's ridiculous! But ADCOMs should (hopefully) understand the difference between a speeding ticket and a drunk and disorderly conviction.

It looks like I have the same problem. I received one speeding ticket in Ohio about 5 years ago. I submitted my background check on 1/5 and it hasn't been completed yet. And just like you, I never received any e-mail. I'm going to call them on Monday because, frankly, that's bull****.

For those worrying about the wait, it's because Certiphi has to contact you to confirm what they find on the background check. Those A******* don't care about what type of misdemeanor traffic violations are and they'll report everything to AAMC. If you call them, it will just expedite the process.

I wouldn't worry much though because it's highly unlikely you'd lose your acceptance due to a minor traffic infraction. If you do, you should get a lawyer and sue. Seriously. The headlines would read "Speeding Ticket? No Med School for You!" Honestly, these companies have no accountability. It's positively criminal that they don't distinguish between petty misdemeanors (class c; not crimes) and actual misdemeanors.

Something similar here. Just had my Background Check completed, and found a speeding ticket (for 6-10 mph over) was listed on it as a misdemeanor. This is just annoying. I highly doubt this stuff will affect any of us, but leave it to premeds to be concerned about a speeding ticket.

Any insight?

Toadsworth, which phone number did you call to contact Certiphi? (all I see on the Application Station website is the tech support number). Mine was submitted the 1st week of January and I'm still waiting too!!!

Deeply sorry to ask another question here, but are you applying in the 2010 cycle? You guys were sent in for a background check all ready? Should I do mine right now as well? I still have parts of AMCAS to fill out before I send my apps to school this June.

Also, Toadsworth, I believe trying to get that repealed would require you to go to court or speak to a judge or someone. If you can get it off without putting too much time into it, then go for it, otherwise I'd suggest to leave it alone. I mean, if a doctor or an interviewer were looking at the "34 on a 25" and decided to penalize you for it, then that'd be extremely hypocritical, since 99.9% of anyone who drives on a 25 certainly doesn't drive at 25.
