Does anyone know at what point in the application process AMCAS performs its criminal background check? for example, I had a misdemeanor which was dismissed, and I am in the process of getting it completely expunged off my record. While I do not have to mention this on the amcas app, it still might show up if the background check is performed upon submission of my application. (It will probably be about six weeks before expungement is complete, as in absolutely nothing will show up on my record).

Many people have told me that the background check is not performed until acceptance, but I looked on Pitt's website and it made me think that it considers the CBCs while determining who gets interviews:

"Academic citations/infractions, institutional actions and positive CBC will be reviewed at the time of decision regarding invitation to interview but will not automatically preclude invitation to interview."

Does anyone know about the time at which amcas performs the background checks?
Should I call the aamc and ask about this?

Thanks so much for your help🙂

they start Jan 1st, 2011 for your cycle im pretty sure, even if you get accepted in november.

you can perform one on yourself for a fee at any point if your worried something will show up.

From what I understand, a school will only run a background check after you have been accepted or if they are seriously considering pulling you off the wait list.

Unless an application asks if you have ever been charged with a crime or have pled guilty (if you did), you won't need to put down the dismissed offense. Even if it comes up during the CBC, as long as you have answered all questions truthfully, it shouldn't matter.

Also, they can't run a background check without your permission. You have to actively fill in all of the data for the background checker people, and you get to see it (and refute anything) for 10 days before it's released to a school.

Bengarama, that is great news! Not that I don't trust you, but you are sure about this right?

AAMC Background Check Service

About the AAMC-Facilitated Background Check Service

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recommends that all US medical schools procure a national background check on applicants upon their conditional acceptance to medical school. The rationale for performing criminal background checks on accepted medical school applicants is based on a number of issues, including..

  1. the need to enhance the safety and well-being of patients and, in so doing, to bolster the public's continuing trust in the medical profession, and
  2. to ascertain the ability of accepted applicants to eventually become licensed physicians.
The AAMC has initiated an AMCAS-facilitated national background check service, through which Certiphi Screening, Inc. (a Vertical Screen® Company) will procure a national background report on early decision program applicants at the point of acceptance and all other applicants at the point of acceptance after January 1st. In addition, beginning in May of each year, a national background report will be procured for a subset of applicants who are on a participating school's alternate list; medical schools will not receive such reports until the point of acceptance. The AAMC has initiated this service in order to recognize the desire of medical schools to procure appropriate national criminal history reports, and to prevent applicants from paying additional fees at each medical school to which they are accepted.

During the AMCAS 2011 application year, participating medical schools may continue to require applicants to undergo a separate national background check process, if required to do so by their own institutional regulations or by applicable state law. Many medical schools not participating may also require applicants to undergo a separate national background check process.
