For all those that have already begun dental school, would you recommend a backpack or messenger bag? I know that some people opt to buy all the books listed each semester, others just print power point lectures, others carry laptops to school everyday. In general a backpack is more comfortable if carrying a lot of weight. I am just curious what ya'll use and what you carry on you during a typical day. I would love to get by with just a professional leather messenger bag if possible.

Backpack.
Everyone is different, and maybe you won't be the type of dental student who has to lug around articulators, casts, waxing equipment, books, notebooks, laptops, lunches, finals notes, etc. and all you will need is your two hands, a head, and a slim 1/2 lb tablet.
In case you do need to lug all that stuff around with you cause your dental school decided not to set up the lab, clinic, sim lab, and lockers right next to each other with moving hallways to carry you back and forth, I think a backpack is better.

Right, because you'll be making a ton of in-and-out pick-ups and deliveries on your sweet-ass fixed gear in dental school. Make sure you get a stabilizer strap, brah, and always, always rock a cycling cap in clinic. Bonus points for having a Bianchi sticker on your Macbook in lecture.

As a D1, I just need my lightweight laptop on lecture days. Otherwise I only need to bring my purse (and I don't mean an "everything but the kitchen sink" size purse).

Apparently, carrying a smaller messenger bag is a big no no because if you're not carrying a huge backpack, people will think you're trying too hard to be trendy. You have to try really really hard to appear like you're not trying. Otherwise people like gobbluth will judge you.
I think you're over-interpreting, and let's face it, overreacting to, my previous post. Calm down. I was having a little fun. I think we can both admit that being able to open your bag without having to take it off has little to do with dental school, where you'll be sitting in a lecture hall or at a lab bench the whole day.
By the way, I own a couple backpacks, a messenger bag (as a camera bag), a few duffel bags, a hydration pack, tote bags for groceries, blah blah blah. I'm "trying" my hardest! 😉
Oh, and I enjoy building and riding fixed gears on occasion.
haha ok. It seemed a lot more mean spirited when I first read it so I decided to wage war. I could imagine, if you said it in person, how it could be playful, but tone doesn't come out on these forums.
