Backpacks for interviews

I was wondering what people thought on bringing backpacks to interviews. I am planning on bring a padfolio and a book for reading while on the train down to NY tomorrow, but I wanted to make sure that there are usually places to leave backpacks.

There is usually a closet for coats, umbrellas, etc, but I'm not exactly sure about backpacks. Just carry the portfolio and the book. Why do you need a backpack?

It would be kind of a pain to carry around the padfolio and the book the entire day, but I was reading some earlier threads where people made comments that backpacks look unprofessional, which I agree with somewhat. Whatever, I don't think it really matters, I'm bringing the bag.

they will have space for you to put your coats and other belongings that you bring with you. you can bring it with you...just make sure you don't bring a lot of things.

yes. for my interviews, i'm leaving for the airport right after my interview, and the schools say you can leave your stuff in their office (or other designated area)

so what if its unprofessional? the only time when professionalism is essential is when you are interviewing, the admissions office secretary is usually too busy to care about the interviewees accessories!

It makes you look like the only time you have ever worn a suit is the day you interview. Leave the back pack. Bring your wallet (or your purse if you're a chick) and eschew the accesories that you will not need. Why on earth would you need a portfolio? To jot down impressions for your diary?

Just walk around on the interview and tour with your hands in your pockets. Your casualness will set you apart from the other jittery freaks.

Leaving it with the coats is fine; I wouldn't bring it in with you to the interview.

All the schools I nterviewed at had a room for stuff like that. Most of us came in from out-of-town and had bags with us. You can leave anything in the room or closet. The interviewers will never see what you brought. Most likely, you will have some sort of folder to carry around all day that the school gives you which probably includes financial aid info, your interview schedule, etc. If you want to stick that in your own portfolio, I guess you could. Otherwise, I would agree with an earlier post to not carry anything around with you besides what the school gives you: Maybe bring a pen to write down some things with if you need to (many schools will give you pens anyway with whatever packet they have).
