Hey guys so I'm currently a senior and my oGpa is about a 3.1 - 3.2 after this semester. I haven't done so hot in a few classes (C's in physics, biochem, etc) and I know theres a section where you can address them, but what's the best way to approach this? For me personally it was a mix of being lazy and unmotivated, and also challenging. How should I phrase this so I don't come off as a lazy bum?

I made a 1.7 one semester and above 3,8 every other. I told the truth. I had all A's goin into spring break my sophmore year and was social chair and living in our fraternity house. Got too involved and decided to not worry ab 3rd tests in my classes and make up for it on final. Got accepted but didnt attend due to unfortunate fanily situation. And I dont regret that semester at all cause it was by far the most fun ive ever had in my life lol. I didnt put anythibg on my app ab it, just explained when they asked me at my interview. Gotta remember being personable with patients is huge in dentistry cause of the fears and lack of comfort many feel when laid back in the chair.

I don't think you need to address it. Adcom will ask about it in the interview (if they want) and then you just give an honest answer

That's what happened to me, at least.

Ya cause being lazy and unmotivated will really prepare u for dental school so make sure u include that

Then stop acting like an arrogant dick. This forum is for constructive criticism not putting others down.
He put himself down. Not me. No advice will work with an attitude like that.

He's just a troll. He only has 2 posts so don't worry about him.

Yup…if the response doesn't involve flowers, unicorns, and rainbows it's got to be a troll post…………..

You should change your handle to pollyanna.

Sorry for looking at the worry in a positive light instead of a negative one. I'm sure your patients will love your attitude. There's a better way to tell someone they don't have a chance, and being heartless and cold isnt the way.

I had a teacher once call me Pollyanna and I didn't know whether to be offended or not because on one hand you're calling me a little naive girl but on the other hand you're calling me someone who had such a positive influence on a town and it's people that they held a parade when she left. A PARADE!

Don't get Mad get Glad.
I'm pretty sure Glad company stole their slogan idea from this movie.

What are you talking about? I said I have bad grades because I was lazy and unmotivated back then, not now.
I'm not sure if you got rid of your lazy issue, but now you sure have a dishonesty issue, which is even a bigger issue than just being lazy. Fix that and people will be glad to give you advices.

OP: Your only option at this point is to apply broadly and own up to your GPA. The AVERAGE (people on SDN often don't understand averages) GPA for dental schools is usually in the 3.5 range. That said, there will be people who get in with 3.9s and 4.0s. There will also be people who get in with 3.0s and 3.1s. Obviously, 3.9s and 4.0s are limited by the number of applicants who have such high marks. 3.1s and 3.0s are limited by the number of seats available after those with anything above those marks have been accepted. You are fighting an uphill battle, and most adcoms will question your commitment to dentistry and your work ethic. You need to convince them (if possible) that you will be a good dental student, and that you will survive dental school. Perhaps you should be asking yourself if you can survive dental school. What was the REAL reason for your poor GPA? Are YOU certain that you will do well in dental school? Why are YOU certain of this? If you are lazy and unmotivated now, why do you expect that to change in d-school? Why should patients have to accept a dentist who describes themselves as lazy and unmotivated? If you can explain it to yourself, then maybe you'll have a chance at explaining it to adcoms.

Mike Ashley, what was your RC score on the DAT? Because you fail to comprehend just about every thread that you waste valuable space and critical resources in.

OP is a senior. OP is obviously wondering about how to address their low grades on their application. Getting better grades is clearly not an option at this point as they are a SENIOR.

No unicorns or Pollyanna insults required, just a straight answer which actually addresses the question the OP asked.

Actually, there is no section to address bad grades on the primary. The section you're talking about only allows you to talk about significant changes or obstacles that are not academically related..

Thanks for actual good advice. I would say the reason for my previous laziness and lack of motivation was because I didn't know what I wanted to do. But after a public health internship in the summer I realized I wanted to pursue dentistry... hopefully I can convince the adcomms of this

So when you say you didn't know what you wanted to do, are you saying that you had no intention of being a dentist when you were taking the prerequisites?

Kind of... At first I wanted to be a doctor and so I was aiming for med school, but after shadowing a few physicians and surgeons I realized it wasn't what I wanted to do

But I still want to do something in the healthfield that's for sure

What cello was probably trying to get at was if you had some intention of following a health care career while taking your prereqs...the question becomes why did you do poorly?

if you were aiming for med school shouldn't you have tried a lot harder than what you're doing now trying to get into dental school which is generally easier to get into?

so you're telling us that you had bad grades because you were a "lazy bum" and you want us to help you lie and write a misleading excuse to our dental schools that makes you not appear as a once "lazy bum"? are your pants on fire? own up to ur mistakes bruh
