I'm going to start this thread!

So I will begin with my experience today!

This is a top notch program in the midwest, great breakfast, great lunch, great residents, all was going ok UNTIL.... interview #2

I walk in the door..

Interviewer😛lease watch the heat radiator!

Ocean11: Oh I see it no problem

Interviewer: so I just read your statement, and saw that you did research on XYZ 5 years ago, tell me about it

Ocean11: (tells him about it, even though its a foggy memory)

Interviewer: (disinterested...) so what do u want to do with your career

Ocean11: Primary care...

Interviewer: (who is a specialist) You can't make any money in primary care....

Ocean11: I'm not looking to become a millionaire...

Interviewer: no one becomes a millioniare in medicine anymore and its unrealistic to go into primary care expecting to help prevent diseases, the govn't can;t afford it (continues to rant... without any eye contact). Why do you like Univ X?

Ocean11: Diversity of population..... (interupted)

Interviewer: The population here is mainly private, you won't find what you're looking for here.... etc etc etc.... anyways are you interested in research?

Ocean11: perhaps hematology in the future, specifically looking at myeloprolif disorders

Interviewer: lab or clinical research... because its sounds like you are interested in lab research and you're going about it the wrong way....

ANYHOW! THIS WENT ON FOR 30 MIN THANKTHFULLY HE FINISHED AND TOLD ME AT THE END 'YOU'LL MAKE A TERRIFIC DOCTOR WHEREEVER YOU TRAIN'. I had such a bad taste in my mouth after that interview, i decided to leave after taking a shortened hospital tour (probably should have stuck it out). I just wasn't feeling the vibe..... I'm NOT ranking this place... oh well 5/6 went well.... not bad....

Anyone else?

Most of my interviews have been pleasant...actually arm-wrestled one interviewer.

My bad experiences (all at the same program) occured during a general meet-and-greet with the faculty. Don't want to elaborate (and jeopardize my anonymity with the program) but it was a large program and the faculty had no intention of giving false airs...i.e. this was probably the same way I'd be treated on the wards. When talking about research, I got the feeling that I'd be just another person to collect and crunch (their) data till the next group of bodies were selected the following year. Yet I still plan to rank this program highly...

I can tell you a story. One of my friends went for a fellowship interview; he had an abstract and the interviewer told him his research was crap and he offended him. But my friend disagreed with the statement politely. Later the story was the PD called to give him a spot. He did not go to same program of personal reasons.
Anyway my input on this issue is as the applicant pool is extremely competitive, it is difficult to differentiate between X and Y. I am sure some programs institute different techniques to find out their best shot.

I would rank this program if interviewer told you "You are a terrific candidate ....". Also keep in mind even if this attending is mean, one person cannot make your life hard in a University program
