Bad News About Northwestern

Hello Everybody,

I'm sure that all of you who have been complete at Northwestern for a while now and have not heard anything yet will be interested to read on....

I called them today to check my status. Of course, I am still "under review." However, I managed to squeeze some info out of the secretary. She said that the second wave of acceptances will go out in late february, and that they have pretty much already given out all of their interviews, and that there are still plenty of people who are "under review"!!!

So, all of us who have not been invited to an interview yet but have not been rejected, have no more hope...and will soon be rejected!!!!!

To me it doesn't matter. I am happily going to Loyola next summer, which is my top choice anyway, but I thought I would share this with the rest of the pre-med/already med population.

I'm looking forward to people's responses!

I've been alluding to this quite often on other NU threads. I just didn't want to be the one to say all hope was lost. But for those who could read between the lines I had posted that I received my acceptance last year on March 5th. That means by late Feb the administration has already decided who they want to fill the class. Consequently that means interviews are over by the end of Feb at the latest, which means that the last interview invites were probably sent out by the end of Jan at the latest(give or take a few days i guess).

So basically if you haven't received an invite to interview here by now.... you can pretty much stick a fork in ya...you're over with at NU. 🙂

it seems you are kind you happy to see that there are many people who haven't been accepted to your renowned northwestern. if you are, then come back down to earth because I'm sure I would not want to go to school with a guy who is so arrogant and happy to see others fail.

as for "other people's responses," I want to see what everyone else is thinking who are in my shoes and what schools they are going to next year.

As for NU. I am one of those who was still "under review". I went into the admissions process thinking NU was my top choice, for the following two reasons- it has an unbelievable location and it has good reputation. But as the application process went on it slid quite a bit on my list because of the high pricetag but more-so because of the huge enourmous humongous emphasis on problem-based learning (moreso than any school I know of except perhaps Harvard). That learning style may fit some but its just not for me. I know I will do better on the boards with a more traditional lecture-style learning enviroment. So anyway, I guess I am not upset by having to stick a fork into myself.

I don't think UCLAMAN meant it like that. I think he's one of the more helpful people on this forum.

He is actually quite helpful and I respect his candid response. Don't take yourself so seriously. I'm accepting a thin envelope with a rejection any day now.

People complain when you beat around the bush, and they complain when they give them the straight information.

UCLAMan is not at all like the guy you are making him to be. He is a nice guy, and I'm sure he wasn't trying to be rude or make light of your predicaments. We've all been where you applicants are today, waiting out invites, etc. We are not insensitive to how it feels.

if everyone who ever used preallo came back and gave as much info on their schools as UCLAMAN does, this site would be even more useful than it already is. pple shouldn't take bad news as a personal offense.

Haha...sorry everyone...didn't mean it in an arrogant way. In retrospect it was probably a pretty abrasive remark. But its the truth. You can't escape that.

Just telling it how it is. Too many people here sugar-coat stuff. Meant no offense to people. Hopefully you all have acceptances at other places. If not, pick yourself up and try again. If you want advice on that drop me a PM.

I wish everyone could get into NU. In fact, I wish everyone could get into med school. Trust me, I know what its like to be rejected. In fact, I was rejected by 60+ schools in my day. At the same time, if its over, then its over at a particular school. Get up and move on.

I am truly impressed! Did you actually apply to over 60 medical schools or are you exaggerating? Is that a record? By the way, thanks for all the info about NU through this application season.

To the OP:
Obviously I'm disappointed that I'm not going to get an interview. I was really looking forward to the gorup portion but life goes on. I don't feel too badly because NU does have that undergrad/med school program so I think they don't take that many students. I think that I'd be a lot more disappointed if NU were on the Evanston campus since it's such a nice town and my husband's whole family lives there. I'm not very enthusiastic about living in an urban area. So far I'm not sure where I will be going next year. I hope that I'll be re-assigned to the Chicago campus of UIC so that I'll be able to attend there. Ideally, Loyola will decide to interview me because I like their locatino much better.

Yup...60+ schools over 2 cycles. Nothing to be impressed about IMO. But if you want it...its there...just got to take the fork out after you've been stuck with it and jump back into the frying pan.

I'm impressed by your response. If it had been me, I would have told drboris and bokermmk to SHOVE IT. What they need to realize is that, when people post to a thread, they don't always have the time to go over the post with a fine-tooth comb, screening for all possible connotations and interpretations in the hope that they can avoid offending all the *****s who will inevitably take the message out of context.

If people would just take each post at face value and stop getting offended so easily, maybe we could avoid having each thread in the pre-allopathic forum devolve into petty arguments between a bunch of overgrown toddlers (as I'm sure this particular thread will now do).

I think everybody needs to just take a deep breath and relax.....

First of all, I wasn't asking a question nor was I looking for anyone's adivce. I was accepted into med school (1st try) and was simply waiting for an answer from Northwestern. Actually, I was trying to help other people in my situation and let them finally know the bad or not so bad news. Pre-meds who were awaiting Northwestern must have been on the edge and probably wanted an answer...so this morning I wanted to put their worries to rest.

Secondly, people who got this far in the northwestern application process without being rejected most likely got in somewhere else already.

Why do you think people are afraid to hear the real truth? I completely agree with you guys that we should not "sugar coat" what we say, not in this forum or in any of the others either. However, I personally took offense that UCLAman was acting as if he was so high and mighty. I don't really care that I didn't get into NU, I tried like everyone else (including the UCLAman himself). I look to SDN as a resource for advice and info, so everyone's input is obviously needed and appreciated.

I suggest we stop being so defensive and arrogant, and instead try to vent and help each other....just like we all (including UCLAman) have on other threads.

The rumor is indeed true, I interviewed there recently and they said we were "just in time."

I'm going to stay out of the argument... its amazing how many threads digress into this sort of crap. If in doubt, don't assume that someone is being arrogant.

I love the PBL personnally. And moreover, the flexibility in the schedual. Only 10 hrs of lecture during the week gives you time to study on your own and contact faculty during bussiness hours. I was impressed by something my student interview said, how faculty are a common rescource for PBL, for example, they would teach you how to read an x-ray.
