D+?

Definitely retake it, in my opinion.
I mean, you may still have some far out chance...but unless you can get that up, you'll definitely be at least hobbling.

Retake this course. I may be incorrect but I think you need a c or better in all pre-reqs. In general dont worry to much about one grade as long as you meet or surpass the specific requirements of the universities to which you are applying.

1. You cannot go to medical school unless you make a C or above in that course. You are REQUIRED to retake it.

2. Yes, you can apply to medical schools. You can even be accepted to schools prior to retaking it. The only rule is that you must complete it PRIOR TO MATRICULATION.

--> My advice is to retake it ASAP, but with a DIFFERENT PROFESSOR. Remember, the grade will be REPLACED on your transcript when you retake it.

Ah the grade will be replaced on the transcript but the COM he is applying at will factor in both scores right?

I hate to say it but I've never heard of a situation where C's aren't required in pre-req classes

Looking at the websites of the medical schools, I only see a few that mention this requirement.

Nope.

It's a universal requirement. You need a 70 or above in ALL prerequisite classes.

i agree with OSUdoc, you SHOULD and you NEED to retake that orgo class. you need at least a C and above in order for the prereqs to count. Do it soon so that you don't have to worry about it later on.

Some schools don't mention the C requirement for premed prereq classes. NYCOM does not on their website. Perhaps they feel this should be universally understood. Be sure you don't have any C-'s either.

Hmm, I'm already taking a summer course right now. Would it be too late if I took orgo in the fall semester, if i'm applying for 2007?

Thanks for the advice guys.

I wasn't too concerned with the timing of my pre-req because I was already done before I applied, but I think its okay as long as you send in updated transcripts. Most schools like to see all your pre-req grades. Do they even have Orgo II in the fall? You may want to wait a year then.

Retake it at a CC if you have to. But retake it. Aim for an A, get a B+/B at the lowest, but don't settle for anything less than a C.

Orgo grades vary so much because there are so many different ways of teaching it and testing it. The trick is finding one that works for you.

Do both orgo I and II have to be taken with lab? or can i get away with just one orgo course with lab? Especially since this one's gonna be a re-take?

In any case, how will AACOMAS, or the schools know if the course did or did not have labs in it? I know my transcript doesn't list that for the other courses i took.

I'm not a big fan of posting other websites on SDN, but ratemyprofessors.com saved me through undergrad. Go there, study the teachers. The one's who all said are very hard, just stay away from. I took the ones who had the highest points in easiness because my goal was to get into medical school - not learn OChem... try the site, it is a savior imho. And if they're extra hard at your school, look at surrounding schools (junior colleges included as a few classes at a J.C. shouldn't hurt your chances)

My school offered a single 2 hour lab course that you took concurrently or after O Chem II.

You'll need 2 hours of o-chem lab.

If you already have a C or above in 2 hours of O-chem lab, then there is no need to retake it.

OSU--just out of curiosity, was ochem + lab at your institution 5 credits? At mine we were given 3 credits for lecture and freaking 1 credit for lab for all that work. 😡

On a different note, I didn't have to take ochem 2 lab. KCUMB credits things a bit differently but also has more class requirements than a lot of other schools (for example, biochem and genetics on top of having 12 bio credits).

To the OP: OSUdoc is correct. C and above = no need to retake lab. Good luck!!

you people are talking about "nothing less then a C".. Man, if you are wanting to go to medical school then you need to get mostly A's, and a few B's... Even C's are unacceptable, unless of course you are a minority, then you can get alot more C's than normal and still get into medical school.

What is your problem? You came into my post and did the same thing. Are you trying to ruffle feathers? Or are you a bitter pre-med that didn't get into medical school yourself? I think tthe latter fits well.

Stop trolling. 😡

Baylor University:

Ochem I Lecture = 3 hours

Ochem II Lecture = 3 hours

Ochem Lab = 2 hours (taken with Ochem II or after)

Troll,

I am a white male.

I had a C in genetics, general chemistry, physics, general chemistry lab, spanish, biostats, calculus, and probably more, but I just don't remember all of them since there were so many.

I was accepted to 4 schools and interviewed at 5.

out of curiousity, how many schools did you apply to? did you apply early?

Oh my god!! You have totally made my day! I received two C's in the fall, and my gpa fell to a 3.18. I have a 3.92 for my first two years, but the gpa didn't transfer into my new college. So the 3.18 is only my gpa for my junior year. Anyway.....I asked for some advice on the MD threads, and they all told me to take another year to boost my GPA, or else I better change my career goals. 🙁

I applied to 19 schools (6 DO schools.)

I recieved interviews at 4 DO schools and 1 MD school.

My interviews were all done by the first week in December.

I applied in mid-June.

I have been told that the AACOMAS doesn't go off of your schools GPA calulation anyway. When you send transcripts from all of the schools and colleges attended your GPA should come up some. Especially if you had a 3.9+ before now.

What was your mcat score? And which schools were you accepted at?

Marcia

I'm planning on applying both DO and MD probably, but I'm in a somewhat similar situation. Before I transferred to my current university, I got a C- in Organismal Biology (long story). Anyway, I ended up transferring the following semester, and earned a 3.94 GPA for the last three years (I just graduated). The problem is, I've taken several biology courses (one with lab at my old instituation that I got a C- in, and a few more at my second school which I aced), but only one of the bio courses I took and aced at my second school had a lab with it. So then I have several A's in biology courses, but if you look at just my "biology with lab" classes, I have a C- and an A.

I know it'll vary from school to school, and this is an MD school, but I emailed Temple and asked them about this, and they said they would use one of my other A's in a non-lab biology to fulfill the prereq's (as in, they see I've taken two bio with labs, and one of them was a C-, but I've taken additional bio courses and got A's in all of them.
