Is going through Barrett and participating in on the honors courses and thesis a little risky for someones GPA? Should I just go to regular ASU? Would a "honors" student graduating from Barrett have a higher advantage then someone graduating with a little bit higher GPA from regular?

I feel like the "honors" recognition sounds appealing to adcom. Is that completely wrong? Sorry if it is a dumb question! Thanks!🙂

I was wondering the same thing. Part of me thinks the Addom would prefer to see a "regular" 3.8 over an Honors 3.5...... After all, you're taking the same science classes. I think it would come down to a case-by-case basis.

But still I wonder, why take the hit in GPA just for Honors, when Med Schools may not even care? I'll be busy enough!

Do they give any perks to honors students? I know schools that offer priority class registration, scholarships, ect. This might make it worth it.

I've seen people say that med schools don't care that much about honors, but more about "honors in your major." May be wrong, but still my question is - how do you know how tough the rigor will be? I think it'd be a bad decision to turn down honors with several perks like the above just because you don't predict yourself doing well.

Nope. Adcoms should understand that some students just don't want to pay extra money (I definitely wouldn't).

I'd say focus on your ECs, but the thing is Barrett could help you access those ECs (and have an easier time building a relationship with certain research professors).

^ a perfect example of one of the perks honors can offer.

Congrats, and besides getting easier ec's, what else do you think it has to offer. I am an honors student and want to continue honors but I am starting to think that it would be too risky and why do all that extra work when it won't matter the soulless adcoms...

priority class registration, scholarships

Thanks 🙂 Also, they may have their own living community (i know this was the case for many of the colleges I applied to). Just want to mention though, I can't really be sure to tell you these above will be included in this specific honors program. It can vary very much from school to school. Best advice I could probably give is research the honors college a lot, and possibly (if you have any chance) speak to some honors students. Good luck with your decision!

You overestimate the additional difficulty of doing an honors curriculum. Most of your honors credits will probably be from doing some extra project on top of standard coursework that doesn't affect your GPA. The first year philosophy/lit course is challenging but with effort you can still get a good grade.

The bottom line is if you are trying to impress the adcoms don't bother. If you are looking for a more enriching experience or if you think the perks (priority registration for example) are worth the effort, then do it.
