Hello SDN peoples

Does not look like I will be offered an interview this year (3.5 gpa 18 DAT). I have been looking at masters programs and found Barry University's Biomedical Sciences program. I have done some research and I have concluded that this program might not be worth the cost/time. When I called and talked to the university everyone seemed pleasant and willing to help but I just do not see this program being that beneficial in regards to all of the other masters possibilities. I do not want to spend 18 months and not come out with a useable degree if dental school doesn't work out and I have to work for a couple years before I can finally attend a dental school.

Has anyone attended Barry's BMS program and can give me so feedback?
Any thoughts?

I am also looking at Tufts and BU programs for biomedical sciences combined with MPH programs. Any thoughts on these?

I do not want to give up on becoming a dentist and if I need to go for a masters I will but I want to make sure that it will be well worth the effort.

I am looking into master programs as well for this next year and I will be applying to Barry. I met someone on this forum who attended the one year accelerated program and had a lower GPA than you and they got accepted into dental school after the program. Your GPA is high enough to go through the one year program and it seems like a good program to me! I am also applying to BU, I attended one of their webinars and found it very helpful in my questions I had on the program.
In the long run I believe a masters is worth the cost and effort. If you don't think you will be getting into dental school this year then you need to do something to make yourself a stronger applicant for the next time you apply. Also this will help keep you sharp and strong in your study skills.
Good luck!

Have you considered just retaking your dat? Your gpa seems fine

I agree with the above, your Gpa is competitive if your sciGpa is on par as well. I highly recommend you bunker down and prep for the DAT like a mad man and save your self 12-18 months of time and tens of thousands of dollars. With the right DAT score you will be golden (with the rest of your application on par as well).

Masters are to remediate low GPAs like my U.G. Gpa... Initially I had a overall 3.0 and about a 2.8 sciGpa along with an 18AA. So I attended Barry's masters program (graduated last may) and brought my Gpa up to a 3.7 (could have done better but had some stuff come up [all A's but two courses]) along with a DAT retake. And I ended up landing 7 interviews (attended 5), 3 acceptances thus far, and two waitlist at the moment.

But for dental the Barry program works wonders, it has a very high turn over rate for those who work hard and put in the time.

But my advice just retake the DAT and save your self sometime and a significant amount of money.

How much time daily did you devote to studying while attending Barry? Also, did you have a gap year after graduating?

Everyone's study times very depending on your learning style and study habits. But I personally would study 3-4 hours a day on days further from test dates and bump it up to 6-8 hours a day when test dates roll around. But also keep in mind some days I don't study at all or very little especially on days like the weekend (F and Sat) this allows for mental rest and time to go out with your friends and what not.

I did have a gap year.

awkward moment I come back to the thread 3 months later lol. I've enrolled for the fall semester at Barry. Do you have any advice on how to be successful in the program?

I am starting at Barry in the fall too, are you applying to dental school this cycle as well? If so, what classes are you putting for your "planned" section for barry, if we dont pick classes until august?

If you dont mind sharing, what was your score/AA when you retook the DAT after you finished the Master's program ?

I am currently attending the Barry BMS program (this is my third semester and my last). I am a pre-dental student and I DEFINITELY think that this program is absolutely worth it.

Don't believe the stereotype that they accept everyone, that is definitely not true, the program is under new management and we have a new dean who is genuinely interested in making this program the best it can be.

The classes are challenging but if you put in the effort you will definitely get results. I started this program in January 2014 and applied through ADDSAS this cycle, I received for invites for interviews for dental school and can proudly say that I will be a dental student starting September!

Now having said that you also have to consider the downfalls of attending a program like that. For me, I know that the program used be to be on main campus (Miami Shores) but now they moved it to Hollywood. When they were on main campus they had access to real cadavers for the gross anatomy labs, however now in Hollywood since the campus is so small they use plastic models and this virtual cadaver model which I don't think is the best representation of what gross anatomy will actually be like once you're in dental school. I also think that some of the notes that they give us for some classes are a little outdated and need to be changed a little but I feel like that is a program you can encounter at every school.

In the end every program has its ups and its downs and if you really want to be a future dentist/doctor and willing to put a lot of hard work and countless hours of studying in this program it will definitely work out for you. Plus all the professors and faculty over there are really friendly and they definitely try to everything they can to help you accomplish your goals.
