I've been acccepted to the podiatry program at Barry for this fall. Does anyone that is there know how the surrounding areas are with respect to crime and stuff like that. just curious I'm looking for a place to live and obviously trying to find a place that is close and safe. and is the summer semester thing that barry does common among podiatry schools?

What kind of summer semester are you speaking of? Just the first semester starting early? Or is it a program similar to NYCPM's?

Hey, I believe its summer semester classes (for the pod students).

There are only three podiatry internship programs: Ohio, Temple, and NYCPM

I was referring to the fall, spring and summer semesters. i know that in undergrad you had summer semester available but i didn't know if the summer semester is "required" to graduate in 4 years and is there anyway to graduate earlier than 4 years?

It's podiatric medical school and you will be receiving a professional degree! The school admissions may be lax (at some schools) but the program itself is very intense. Unlike undergrad, you have all the same classes with your classmates and no choices on which courses to take (except few extra electives if they are available). I don't believe there is even a slight possibility of graduating early.

I think a possibility of graduating at a different time would be for those in the 5 year program.

Sorry for sounding like an @sshole but I'm just saying there are no shortcuts for pod med school.

As was said, the program is laid out for you at any pod school. There are essentially no electives or selecting of courses. You will automatically be enrolled each semester based on the program outline (student handbook pages 13+). The only way a student would have a schedule different from their classmates is if they failed or withdrew from a class and entered the extended program; that's a more complicated situation because, depending on what course wasn't completed, the extended students might be missing pre-req for various subsequent courses. Those situations are all covered in the handbook also.

A full summer semester is mandatory for every pod student at Barry, but that's not the case at every pod school. Some schools have lightened loads in the summer and some schools have significant portions of the summer off. That's just differing curriculum between the schools, but it's also the reason you can't remediate an abbreviated version of a failed class during the summer at Barry as you can at some other pod schools (you just get switched to 5yr track and repeat any failed class the next year).

You will have summer classes at the start of your second year, summer classes and clinics at the beginning of 3rd year, and summer clinics and externships at the beginning of 4th year. You do still get at least a couple weeks off between didactic semesters. Clinical work gets a bit fuzzy depending on your assignments, but you still get some breaks.

As for housing, if you read down this forum a bit, I've addressed that question a couple times. Barry pod c/o 2010 is also sending incoming students some housing tips and leads...

i'm not saying that its lax, and since i've never been to pod med school before i didn't know what the style of scheduling. but thanks for answering the question

hey~

you should be receiving an email shortly with a list of all the buildings that the second year class lives in..i would pick one of those, and consider living at least fifteen minutes off of campus in either downtown miami/south beach or aventura

I'm a pod student right now and i live in sunny isles beach (north miami beach) and know there are several housing places (mostly high rises) that are very nice and can be affordable in this area. This area is just south of aventura. I would also agree with Brizant of getting ahold of the list where all the students live

Does anyone know what are the class hours like during the first semester? What Time do classes start and end on a typical day.

Congratulations on your acceptance. Go to Barry's website: www.barry.edu Search for "off campus Housing." This will direct you to their housing database, where will you find many listings. Good luck.
