To go or not to go? That is the question...is it worth it?!? Their website isn't too informative and I have yet to see any Barry students comment in this forum. Should I bother?

Go! You have to take forums like this with a grain of salt. A fair amount of what I read about each school I interviewed at this year turned out to be completely false.

Every school is going to have it's advantages and disadvantages. You might find you like it and end up going there. Worth a shot imo.

Talk to Feli on these forums, he just graduated from Barry. I encourage you to go, seems like a pretty good pod program overall. Not sure how your interview will be set up though, I've heard the dean (a lawyer) who normally interviews is on a "leave of absence"

I actually didn't want to interview at Barry because of what was said on this forum. I added the interview as a vacation. I actually liked it and am now a second year student there. See it for yourself. If you have any questions, pm me.

I had the same problem bc they sent me a waitlist invite. turned out they had extra seats and offered admission to me a week later.

the way i figure is that if u got a lil cash to burn, why the hell not?! miami in the summer.... cant think of anything to do with ur downtime on the trip...

pros of barry:
-ummm... miami!
-new building for 3/4th yr
-not stuck with 8 students to a cadaver like some places
-met a few students who were put on a 5th yr track to ensure that they were ready when they graduate
-dual degree program is easy to get into
-take a test to get ur masters in biomed sci bc all the courses overlap
-attractive people... ok thats just a side reason, but it makes ur strole thru campus nicer
-trolly gets u around campus pretty quick
-people (staff and students) on campus are friendly
-cost of living is very affordable now bc of the bad economy... ppl are just dying to get their places rented out


cons of barry:
-its in miami, so ud think ud be taught medical spanish like nycpm.... nope (reserved for PA students)
-lecture halls were a bit old for my taste (i guess compared after seeing ny's plasma tvs and large table desks)
-need to drive urself around in yr 3/4 bc there is no onsite clinic (miami public transport is major thumbs down)
-didnt like the building archetecture... felt like i was in costa rica (lol very random point, but im from the north)
-around the campus pretty much isnt that great in terms of what to do
-no housing options if u need it (but who wants to be in a dorm when u can rent a beachside place)
-traffic!!! blah

keep this in mind when u go there: is this place condusive to studying? you are not in miami to go to Spaces (club open til 6PM each nite) or the beach. if you are the type that will get distracted easily, an urban school esp one with a beach might not be the best option. as one poster said... its all up to ur personal taste

For the OP question, I'd visit any schools you are seriously considering. $200-400 or whatever you'd spend on travel might seem like a lot, but it's important to find a place you can find success. Considering you're gonna take out probably $150-200k in loans to pay for 4+ yrs of pod school and living expenses, the interview trip cost is pennies.

it is possible to get a studio place in north shores for 600-700 in case u want to be within walking distance if u dont want a car the first 2 years

also dont forget about craigslist!

How do you like Barry? What made you matriuculate there as opposed to other pod programs? How many students are there per cadaver?

I'm not sure where you got this info from. 8 people sounds a bit ridiculous. From talking to current students + going on interviews, there seemed to be an average of about 4 students to a cadaver. Barry used to be 6 people, but now I believe is 5 (and that was the biggest number I heard)

Mr. Feli, did you find it difficult when you transfered from OCPM to Barry GMS? Was there a huge difference in coursework, class load, quality of teachers? I wanna make good choice when I apply for class of 2014 and you know best since you went to both programs. Muchas Gracias sir!

As a current student, that is true. In my gross we had 4 students which worked well and for Lower it was 2 students per limb which was great, 1 or 2 people even had a leg to themselves.

From the schools I've visited thus far, 4-5 students per cadaver for gross and 2 students per lower limb is pretty standard. This is a decent number since there is definitely a lot of body to cover.

How large is the class at Barry? Do most students complete their residencies in FL or do they go out of state? Where do the students do their clinical rotations...I know there are a couple of DVAs there but what major hospitals?

As for the weather, which I'm sure is beautiful most of the time, has the school ever been shut down or moved to a different campus for hurricanes? Are hurricanes common in that part of FL?

I highly recommend living close to the school the first year. If you want to get away many of my friends live in Aventura, Sunny Isles is nice too. But I love the fact I can leave 10 minutes before class starts and make it on time. I live in Capri Gardens and I like it. The Holly House right across the street from me was recently bought by Barry and is housing undergrad only and I believe the rest goes to non-undergrad.

Classes aren't too large. It varies from 40-100. The larger classes are the ones we take with those students who are in the masters program (BMS).

I don't know what percentage do their residency in FL. You don't have to ofcourse and I know many who don't. I don't want to do it here.

Summer is the season for hurricanes and I believe last year a test was cancelled because of it/warnings.
