Quick question i just got done with my interview at temple it went ok... a bit draged out if you ask me. But my question is this I was looking at Barry University am thinking about applying there also but i've heard lots of negatives about barry. My question is why is barry getting a bad rap?

Out of all schoo, in terms of campus and people, I acturaly like Barry the best. It's also near Miami and it's really nice. The school is nice. However, I am not too sure about the podiatry department. I did have a tour and even the students admit the school is not that organized. In terms of which one is better, you can check out the thread that has the "ranking". At any rate, I don't think Barry is at the very top. However, if you are going to throw 150-200 grand to a school, you might as well interview more places and talk to the people. I know DMU and AZPOD has the DO affiliation so that's a plus. Chicago and Temple has affiliated with the MD schools too. Chicago has really good research if you are into that. I have heard good things about OCPM because the two of the podiatrists that I talked too enjoyed their experience and had good residencies. They are biased too of course.

Just another note, you might want to interview at most of the places and see what scholarship they offer you. I know this kid that had a huge scholarship and live close to OCPM and he has minimum loan. That's something to consider. If there is not that much difference financially, you might as well go to the top schools.

What year is he? Many schools offer big scholarships to applicants to get you in the door, but most students lose them. They usually have class rank or GPA requirements; so if you have to be in the top 10, then only 10 people will be happy in the 2nd year.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of pre-pod school scholarships. I feel that the school is purchasing the candidate rather than investing in him/her with their education. That being said, I don't mind the concept of rewarding students on a GPA basis. The way it works in OCPM, is that you get a scholarship for top GPA, and you get scholarships if you have a GPA of 3.5 and above (Dean's list). In additions, you get minimal scholarships at GPA's above 3.0 (hundreds of dollars). Alot of this money comes from private funding and the alumni association at the school.

That being said, I don't think scholarship value should compromise the decision to go to a top school. Yes loans suck and stay with us for a long time like luggage, but at the end of the day, the value of your education is far more important than a discount on your education.

Just a correction, Temple is not affiliated with the MD school. They have their own building, set of basic science and clinical professors for the most part. In addition, their curriculum does not parallel that of their MD program. However, it is still a good school nonetheless, but i'm just stating facts.

But you do rotate through all of Temple's hospitals with the MD students on some clerkships even though you don't take classes with them. And some of the classes are taught by the same MD's that teach the med students even though the curriculum is not parallel. It would be nice though if it was integrated.

yes you're correct with you assessment...the fact that some classes in temple are taught by MDs the reason i know this is b/c they kept driving that down my throat during the interview

This does not mean that they are MD level courses. MDs taught at my undergrad too.

Just to complete your correction, the same is true about Scholl. They only take a few courses with the MD students (gross anatomy and interprofessional healthcare teams.) Though things might change in the near future at SCPM. They are moving to 2+2 curriculum, which may allow them to integrate more courses.

This is usually an agreement with the university hospitals NOT the Temple MD school.

NYCPM has some of the same professors of mount sinai and ny medical college. I am not sure but I do not htink we get the same classes.

I don't want you guys to get frustrated when your comments are corrected. You must remember that future pre-pods will read this. If inaccurate information is on this forum, it is not fair to others. I would also like to see more sarcasm.

If you don't go to DMU, then you probably won't add up to much in podiatry, as a matter of FACT, I know that if you don't go to DMU, then you can't practice medicine at all, all other medical degrees from all the other allopathic, osteopathic, podiatric, physical therapy, PA, MHA and MPH programs out there just can't compete. We should make a specific forum just so we can talk about how cool Feelgood is. Oh, and his research pretty much proved that Jesus didn't exist.

I'm gonna go the other way on this issue and state that I'm always a fan of free money. You have to think how much value you are getting by the time all is said and done. If you can save even $15-30k with total scholarships during 4yrs of pod school, that actually saves roughly $24k-48k by the time you pay it all back (20yr repayment at 5%).

I agree that schools could wait until a student had put in their tuition deposit or signed a letter of intent to release scholarship details, but let's get real here: the schools want to attract good students. Good colleges across the nation offer scholarships upon acceptance to attract qualified students. Many colleges also use scholarships or tuition/housing discounts to attract good athletes, faculty, or staff.

A scholarship might not matter to a student who already has much scholarship or family support coming into pod school, but for other students who are heavily weighing cost of living, tuition, etc for a school, that scholarship amount and its renewability conditions may make a big difference in the ultimate decision. I was pretty sure I was going to go to Barry anyways simply due to my parents retiring nearby, but a significant scholarship offering which was renewable yearly with only a 3.0gpa made the decision even easier for me. I've enjoyed that scholarship and put the money to good use, and I will keep working hard in attempts to maintain that money as well as work on getting additional scholarships which become available as I enter my 3rd and 4th years.

To respond a bit to the OP, your best bet may be to check out Barry for yourself. Ask questions, talk to adminstrators and deans, peek into pod classrooms and labs. I'd pick the school based on your criteria for a graduate program and what you feel is the best fit for you. It's a very important and very personal decision.

Many of the people who bash the university may just be spreading rumors and it's quite possible that they have never even been on the campus. Barry is the newest pod school aside from AZPod, so many Barry grads aren't real far out of residency yet (esp grads since the current dean took over). That and the fact that many Barry alumni like the warm climate and remain in the southern US might limit how much some of the northern pod programs might really know about the program and the quality of the podiatrists which it produces. Who is to say opinions you hear from people who study/practice 1000+ miles away from Miami are not just based off one or two Barry externs or residents they ran across many years ago? If you apply yourself, there's no reason you won't learn a lot anywhere. Why else would a program be/stay accredited?

Actually, this year is the first year that TUSPM basic science curriculum does not parallel with the Temple MD School. The reason for this is that Temple MD school has converted its traditional basic science curriculum to organ based system (similar to DMU) this year. Unfortunately, TUSPM has not done so.

As for TUSPM having its own set of basic science faculty, that is not true for the most part. Majority of the basic science courses are taught by Temple MD faculty. The only few courses that still uses their own TUSPM basic science faculty are Lower Extremity Anatomy, Gross Anatomy (this may change since the current excellent professor is retiring), Biochemistry, and Microbiology. In the past, the basic science courses taught by MD faculty at TUSPM follow the same identical syllabus and course content as the MD students (such as Physiology and Pathology).
