The day you promote to Major is supposed to be 6 years from the date you graduated medical school, correct?

Mine is off by over a month, as I graduated May 6 2006, and they have me as June 8 2006.

Is there any way to correct this? Does anyone know of the regulation that supports this?

Thanks for any help, as always.

I think it is the first day you start internship

Not to hijack, but on a somewhat related note, I had a doc tell me if I can complete my school requirements before graduation I can pin on Capt early and then be promotable to Major early down the road as well.

The guy I met finished everything in early April so rather than waiting around until the end of May he promoted early.

Looking at the paperwork it looks like the stipend stops once you're done though the stipend stops. So while major pay for an extra couple months down the road would be nice, Im not sure living with no income until residency starts on this end would be worth it.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Teacherman- You should talk to your human resources command, or whatever the Air Force equivalent is. Don't rely on hearsay for this, like you said, it's a big decision.

I don't have the specific AFI, but I can tell you that I pinned on O-4 in the AF six years from recommissioning as an O-3. This was in late May, a hair earlier than my graduation and > a month ealier than starting internship. A nuance to be aware of: your stipend does not stop based on when you choose to get promoted. IIRC it ends when your requirements for graduation have been met. You can also recommission as an O-3 after having met requirements for graduation-you just need an officer to administer your oath (I had one of my classmates do it for me and I did it for another). If you are going to graduate early, you should recommission as early as possible. But if you want to hold on to the stipend I would arrange for your last rotation to be closer to when you officially graduate (you could actually meet all but one requirement, take some time off, and then do the last rotation just before graduation if your curriculum is built to accommodate such a scenario).

Edit: as always check official gouge with AFIT a/o AFPC.

For the Army, at least, you should be promoted 6 years from when you started active duty as an O3 MC officer. For most people, that will be the first day of internship. I think the USUHS folks get promoted earlier because 1) they're already on active duty and 2) their graduation tends to be a little earlier than most med schools, IIRC.

Just for the record, and it's a small point but an interesting one, for Army HPSP folks, date of rank is the date your internship starts minus the travel days. This is sort of amusing because you get promoted earlier simply because you had to move further!

This explains the very odd date on mine, then. Thanks for the information, sounds like you've got a good source! (hard to come by)
