I was wondering if you move to a new base and decide to live on base because you don't know the area, then decide you want to move off base... How hard is this to do?
Not hard. At most bases, you are required to stay in base housing for a set period of time once you move in. For example, at my last base, it was 1 year. Once that time is up, you can move off base if you would like. You will need to jump through some hoops to make sure your BAH is turned on again and you will have to pay all the costs of moving, but it is doable.

In the Army there is no requirement. If you first live on base, and then choose to live off base (or the other way around) you are responsible for moving yourself. The Army moves you once to an area, and with very few exceptions will not move you again until you leave the area for your next assignment or if you are getting out.
