Hi, I have been reading this forums for a long time. I have a big decision to take and Im getting crazy thinking about it all the time.

I just started a Ph.D in OMFS in Japan, its 4 years long.

I have to decide between doing research in Distraction Osteogenesis using animals (with more focus in clinic I think) and maybe other projects in collaboration with the pathology department (maybe some basic research) or going fully into basic research probably in lymph node metastasis with a very high impact factor and respected department.

I just dont know what its better for me and my future, this decision will determine the next 4 years of my life. btw Im not a OMFS specialist, Im a DDS (with intentions in doing a OMFS residence later) I dont see myself being a full time researcher in the future, I want to continue doing clinical work in conjunction with research.

Whats more valued in your opinion?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Here is my 2 cents: how do you describe "valued"? Do you want to win a Nobel prize or do you want to be the top surgeon in a specific procedure? If you personally value a Nobel prize more or things along those lines then going the basic research route will be your best bet. If you see yourself becoming a top surgeon in a clinical procedure I'll say go the DO way. Personally, I think there is so much opportunity with new things that can be done with DO and research in the area will be critical.
