I have a little dilemma. I have made many contacts though my local hospital from shadowing/volunteering. A few days ago, the Vice president of human resources offered me a job as an orderly. It sounded like a good idea at first, until I actually heard about some of the things that those guys have to do like: Wiping A$$ES, giving old men sponge baths (what if they get an erection?)--GROSS!!!!! That being said, I’ve heard a lot of premeds are applying for this kind of job.

I’m a little confused. I do feel very strongly about volunteer work, but does the fact that I think I would puke if I had to wipe an old man’s A$$ have any reflection on myself as a premed? I really think that a job in healthcare could boost my chances of getting in to med school a little. It’s just the nature of the work that makes me think twice about it. I know doctors have to deal with juicy aliments from time to time. However, they get paid a lot more than $7.00 bucks an hour too. What do you guys think? Would you do it? If it will significantly help me out in the admission process, then I will do it regardless of the consequences.

Take an EMT course or work as a phlebotomist.

Don't wipe asses. Save that for nurses.

Likely because hospitals employ CNA's for this very role.

There is no CNA component to medical school.

In order to get through medical school, you will have to disimpact someone at some point. That's at least as bad. I'd get used to the idea of being in close proximity to feces and anuses.

I don't know if this is a serious question, but you sound sincerely concerned, so here goes: obviously if you're into the glamour of the medical profession (lots of money, high-power, social respect, etc) being an orderly probably won't be your cup of tea. Honestly, if you feel you are going to puke or even make a disgusted face while helping a person clean himself up, you shouldn't accept the orderly position and should instead take on the jobs others have suggested, like phlebotomy or EMT training. I do think that you should think a bit, though, about how well you are able to respect the dignity of patients. There are very few specializations in which you will never see anyone in a compromising position, and the nature of medicine seems to be patients revealing some of their most private body parts and problems to a stranger who is supposed to help them. I seriously doubt that the "old man" you are bathing or wiping is glad to be unable to do those things himself. Chances are he feels humiliated even without your vomit or your scowl. I'm not an expert and I'm not a doctor, but maybe it would help you to keep in mind that he was twenty-something once, too, and he could probably take care of himself just fine. I don't think that cleaning up various bodily functions is for everyone, so I doubt very seriously that you should abandon your dream of becoming a doctor just because you're not into being an orderly. Perhaps you should think seriously though about tasks you will have to do as a medical student and as a doctor and if you would be able to perform them with respect and humility.

it may have been a serious thread. but reading the OP's post takes me back to many years ago when i too saw my premed peers do all sorts of nonsensical extracurricular activities just to make their med school applications better. it's not the premeds' fault--i don't hate the playas, i just hate the game.
