Howdy everyone!! Decided to start this thread so everyone knows what's going on....as far as the requirements for this program, if you get an interview, and anything related. Good luck everyone applying!

Dynamo....
I'm not 100% sure how they go about choosing their candidates, but if you're a minority...1st or 2nd generation it applies to you. I didn't consider myself a non-traditional student....I grew up with both my mom and dad, and I never HAD to work in high school....I did....but I didn't have to. I think those are some questions in the checklist. I also do not come from a low performing high school, nor is my family considered to make below the annual income.....

So In my situation, why did I consider myself disadvantaged? I am a 1st generation, English a second language, my High school was a joke as far as preparing me for college, our advisement staff was not aware of the different opportunities for minorities, so in a way that is a disadvantage....coming from THIS high school. I didn't realize how great other high schools were in preparing students for college...better yet their careers, until I got to college and met many students who were better prepared than me.

I think everyone has a different story.... answer the checklist honestly and tell them why do you feel disadvantaged.

Hope that helps some.

Thanks! That definitely helps 🙂

Oh and also, what about the overcoming hardship section?

If you guys have any questions I am currently in the program and may be able to help you out. If you don't want to ask here you can PM me. Good luck to both of ya'll!

As far as overcoming a hardship... it may be medical (someone in your family had an accident or you), death in the family.........ummm I guess it depends on the person and each individual situation and what you considers a hardship. I'm not so sure....care to shed some light Scoopie12? As for me it was medical, my dad had an accident 🙁

Scoopie12....around what date did you get your call for an interview?? Was it after the deadline had passed or before?

For the most part, I just remember filling out the application the way they asked and following their guidelines for the questions they asked. Then, I took those answers and applied them to my essay. I also wrote how the program would help me and in general what it asked me for. You don't have to have a really overwhelming hardship to be in the program. Something like being a 1st generation college student is a good place to start. There are a few of us who have had some hardships but for the most part we are all just unique in how we got there. Everyone has their own story.

As far as the call for the interview, I was called before the application deadline had been reached so you may want to get your application turned in ASAP. Applications were due on a Friday and interviews started the next week.

That's really great that you are already in the program. So what was the interview process like? What kind of classes are you taking this year? Is it a guaranteed admission into dental school as long as you meet all the post bacc requirements?

Cheers

rcruiserb,
The interview process is similar to that of other Dental Schools (questions wise) except you don't get a tour. We interviewed with three different members of the admission committee for about 5-10 mins each. The questions are similar to any dental school interview so I would suggest looking at the interview feedback on this site to get a feel for questions for Baylor as well as any other typical questions you would expect to run across.

The classes you take consist of upper level biology courses that you haven't taken already. Possible courses are Anatomy I and II, Neuroscience I and II, Cell Bio, Biochem I and II, Histology, Microbiology, stuff like that. Mostly people try to take the same classes as you quickly will find the other postbacc students become your good friends.

Yea, the admission is guranteed as long as you follow all the requirements. Make your 18 on the AA for the DAT and then go to school and maintain your 3.25. The GPA is pretty easy, the DAT is the tricky part as it tends to put a lot of pressure on you. You also have to take care of business in your two summers as you are given tests and assignments sometimes.

Good luck!

Hey thanks for the info. So what's life like in the post bacc program? Do they keep you guys insanely busy. Do you guys get much down time? Do you get any holidays off?

Good luck everyone! I am applying this year =)

is this program only for TX residents?

rcruiser,
During the first summer things are a little busy as you are taking the DAT study courses and also going to dental lab where you begin doing fillings and also beginning to wax teeth. You also have tests in dental lab that are the same exams that the D1 students take. In your DAT courses you have quizzes and homework to keep up with the material. You also take a few practice DATs while there for the summer. After the first summer session ends you have until school starts at UNT or UTD to take the DAT. Some people take it right away and others wait until right before school starts, the choice is yours to when you feel ready.

You get a lot of down time after the first summer because you are doing the DAT studying on your own so you set your own schedule. Then if you take your test before school starts you have that time off as well.

While you are in school it's just like being in undergrad but no one has a job or anything so you get a lot of time to study and what not. You get all the holiday's off just like a normal undergrad student. So you get spring break and Christmas and Thanksgiving. Pretty much during the academic year you are on UNT or UTD schedule a,d during the two summers you are on Baylor's time. During the summer you are pretty busy though as our days were 8-5 with an hour or two for lunch and studying.

System7,
yea the program is only for in-state Tx applicants.

Yes.

To be eligible for this program, applicants must:

• Have completed a baccalaureate degree from a
U.S. accredited college or university

• Be a legal resident of Texas

• Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (overall)

• Have a history of overcoming adverse circumstances
/ be considered academically or economically
disadvantaged*

• Have demonstrated a desire to work with underserved
populations or in communities with limited
access to dental health care

• Have applied to Texas A&M Health Science Center
Baylor College of Dentistry for admission into the
dental program

Hey guys..... I'm thinking that Baylor is going to be calling some people this week. If anyone gets a call please post !

Thanks and good luck!!

Hi Scoopie,
Thank you for all the information. You have been a very helpful source. I was wondering about the living situation at Baylor. Do you take the DAT at UNT or UTD? The campuses seem to be far away from each other. Is it better to live on a certain campus or is it better to live between the two campuses?

Thank You

rcruiserb

UTD and UNT are two different universities. You are right they are very far apart, but if you get accepted you get to pick which university you want to attend. The DAT is something you would be preparing for during the summer courses which are held at Baylor.

Hope this helps

rcruiserb, as RDH said UNT and UTD are both pretty far apart, as is Baylor from the two. During the first summer you take the courses at Baylor which is downtown, we had the option of living at the nurses dorms for the summer so quite a few of us lived there. Once school starts at UTD or UNT everyone just lives off-campus, I am not sure if you can live on campus at either university actually. You are only committed to going to either UNT or UTD so you don't have to live in between the two, just near the one you want to attend. Most of our class went to UNT for what its worth but its up to you.

The only downside to living at the nurses dorms is that you won't move into your apartment near UNT or UTD until August probably, and then you are stuck having to sublease your apartment for the second summer session before dental school starts. Hope that helps!

Hey has anyone received a call?? I really thought they were going to call this past week.....maybe they did and I didn't get a call..... 🙁

Hi HOPE4DABEST,

I didn't get a call back either. Sucks was really looking forward to getting a call last week. Lets hope we get the call this week. Good luck everybody and thank you RDH and Scoopie. You guys have been really helpful.🙂

Hi guys,

I called baylor and they haven't made any interview offers and are still reviewing applications (This was Friday). I know it's rolling admissions so I was a bit surprised.

Yeah I thought it was rolling admissions too, but I called them twice over the past two months and both times they said that they wait until after the deadline to review.. so im guessing well be hearing something hopefully in the coming weeks!

You guys made my day!!! I really hope they call!! * Crossing fingers* 🙂

Hi Scoopie,

Thanks for the post-bacc info! I understand that the applicant must make a 18 on the DAT, is that required for every section on the test? Will they kick a person out of the program if one section is below an 18?

Teethy,
No, you don't have to get an 18 on every section of the test. All the science sections (Bio, GC, OChem) you had to have at least a 16 on. But the PAT, RC, and QR you can score whatever. The RC and QR try to do your best on though because they influence the overall AA score. So if you get a 14 on QR but an 18 on the AA you are good to go. The PAT score in essence has absolutely no influence on anything so it's your choice how you want to approach it. The PAT is a good time to write down math formulas before the QR section as well if you are not taking that section as seriously since it doesn't matter. Good luck!

Is it true that we dont have to retake the DAT if we already have an 18 on AA?

Howy yall!!! I'm really excited about the PBP at Baylor!!! Im crossing my fingers and toes for a phone call in the next few days/weeks....the last time I talked to Ms. Sneed she said the application count was right around 70, has anyone heard anything different?? My little sister interviewed at Baylor this week for the SPEP High School program this week, and she said that they were also interviewing students for the college program, soooooo im hoping and praying that the PBP applicants will be next on the list.... Please update if yall have any interesting info and I'll do the same!! Thanks and Gig'Em!!😀

Hi guys,

I thought I should include that Ms. Sneed mentioned about receiving 126 applications by March 15th. I guess a lot of them came in the last minute.

I have a question for you guys. Did you all receive a letter from Baylor encouraging you to apply for this post-bacc program? I received an electronical letter that was forwarded by Ms. Sneed. However, the letter was written and signed by the Director (I believe Dr. Lacy). I assume it was sent to all of the applicants who applied for the DDS program this cycle...?

Whoa 126?!

Wasn't the deadline the 12th? (edit: just realized they probably postmarked it the 12th and Baylor received it on monday)

I received that same email with the letter from Dr. Lacy, I believe it is sent to all applicants who applied this cycle.

126!!!!! OMG I really hope that they miss counted, when I talked to Ms. Sneed it was the week before the application deadline and the count was at 70!!! I cant imagine them receiving 50+ applications in just a weeks time....It looks like in the past those that applied late didnt really have a chance, I wonder if that will hold true this time around?? And as for the letter encouraging everyone to apply, I think they just sent it out to everyone who applied to Baylor this year....Now im REALLY nervous!!!! Im hoping, praying, and wishing I get a phone call with a (214) area code in the next few days..... I wish I knew when the committee was meeting....Please keep us posted with any updates or interesting information that you guys hear!!!

I dont think I ever received an email to apply for the post-bacc...

Has everyone received their letter of unacceptance from Baylor?

I called Baylor today and they mentioned that the adcom will meet in one to two weeks to review applications. The interview invites should be out latest in 3 weeks. Also, she mentioned that the date you turned in the application will not matter.

Howdy yall!! I talked to Ms. Sneed today and she confirmed what others have said about us not hearing anything for the next couple of weeks.....BUT more importantly she gave me a final application count.....Are you ready for the new number????? 148 😱 I was like excuse me come again, I must have misheard you....nope I heard her correctly the first time 148 applications!!! No wonder its going to take two weeks for them to go through them all!!!!! I thought I would share the news with you guys!! I hope yall have an awesome weekend and if you hear anything new and interesting please post it!!! Thanks and Gig'em!!!

I think of the ~1600 views on this thread 1500 of them are mine :/

Not sure how i'm going to make it to April lol.

Thanks for the updates guys, keep them coming....

Thats alot of applicants!! I still don't think its fair for those who busted our butts to try and get that application in early and they're still giving those people that turned in their application late the same chance.....Im sorry I dont!! I turned my application the thursday after it opened....I made sure to ask my professors last semester for the LORs and I wrote my essay during Christmas.....so I busted my butt!! I really want this.... I do.

I'm moody..... bad day at work 🙁

Try to cheer up HOPE4DABEST... and stay positive! I was told today that there's no interview offers as of yet.

Howdy yall!! I just wanted to post that I am SOOOOOO nervous and im seriously wishing away time!!! This week is supposed to be the week that the committee meets and decides who to interview eek!!! Luckily this week is a little busy so I "should" be otherwise preoccupied....BUT im NOT and im super nervous and I thought I would share it with yall 😀 I wonder if they'll start calling people this week?? I have made myself promise that I will NOT call the post bac office for a status update until Wednesday afternoon lol, I think three days of the committee mtg should suffice!! If anyone else wants to call and ask questions please post any info received and I'll do the same!!! I hope we all hear something good soon :xf:

Howdy ya'll!!! I think this past few weeks have been the slowest ever!! I too feel your pain afrodentalchic...... I wouldn't be surprised if calls dont go out until next week Friday the latest....and the following would be interviews, and then the next its already when they're supposed to say if you're in or not....I dont think they'll push that deadline right?? I hope not! I can't take this waiting anymore!!AAAAAAAAH!!!

I have been checking this forum for two weeks now, I'm so happy I found it. I called Ms.Sneed this morning and she informed me the committee is reviewing applications but no interviews have been extended. She said phone calls may begin next week. The delay is due to 148 applications she informed me this was the largest amount since the program started. And the April 15 deadline still applies, everyone should know yes or no by then. I think its awesome we are all keeping each other posted. You're in my prayers!!

I check this forum more than my facebook🙂 lol

Howdy guys!!
I received a call from Natasha today around 4ish but I missed it!!! I was at work and didnt get a chance to return it until past 5 and of course she didnt answer. She just left a voicemail to call back. I am hoping and praying it was an invite!!! I don't want to get too excited but I cant help it!! 😀 I am calling her tomorrow around 11am so I will post what the call was about as soon as I can get away from work for a minute. Good luck everyone!!

I got a call too!!!!!!! I was invited to interview and I am SOOOOOOO unbelievably happy!!!!! I hope that all of you receive your calls too!!!!! YAY BAYLOR!!!!!!!!!😀😀😀😀😀😀

What did they say?? Did they want to set up an interview?? When are you going??!! Im soooo excited for you!!! Im hoping that was the reason they called me too!!😀

Howdy Hope4daBest!! Well actually what happened to me was similar to what happened to you, I missed the call two times while I was taking a test!! And i totally freaked out!!!! I called back like 5 minutes before 5 and talked to Natasha and thats when she offered me the interview!!!!! I was like OF COURSE I will come for an interview!!! Its in April on the 6th!!! I really really hope that you got an interview too!!! Please post when you find out 😀😀😀😀

To the people who got interviews, when did yall send in the applications? I am wondering if they are going by when applications were turned in.

Hey txlonghorn!! I submitted my application the first week that we could get it in there, I actually mailed it on January 25 and it got there on that same Friday... needless to say I was really careful to make sure that my application was one of the first ones that they received....Ms. Sneed called me around 4ish today so she may not be done with all of her calls for the interviews.....I wish you the best of luck and I hope that you get an interview!!!!

My application made it there on February the 5th. I overnighted it 😀 I really wanted it to make sure it got there lol!

afrodentalchic-- you're an Aggie too?!?!? Hope to get an invite tomorrow when I call them back....and maybe I'll see you over there 🙂

Good luck everyone!! I really think they're going through the applications and calling people as they see them.....and I think its by the date that you turned them in too.

Thanks for the information y'all. Well, the application to this program is not for me, but my girlfriend (she is an aggie too 👎 ). I hope that they are going by date, as she turned her's in pretty late and the advisor from aTm didn't send her rec letter until the date of the deadline. I really hope she gets an interview. Good luck to everyone, and for those who got interviews, congrats!
