I was looking at my verified GPA and noticed that my some of zoology courses, my botany courses, cell biology courses, and a biology course were all listed at other science and instead of biology. I gave them a call and they told me that anything listed as plant or animals would not be calculated into my BCP! Is this right? The example guide give specifically lists microbiology, zoology, and botany under science. This has brought my GPA BCP gpa down a lot. Is there anything that I can do?

In general, how courses are classified is a function of the department under which they were taken.

Definitely keep calling until someone that is not lazy changes your classifications, if they keep telling you no, contact a supervisor because they are supposed to follow the guidelines in the document posted above. You are dealing with a really important part of your app so make sure that is right.

Edit: BTW the document above is from 2011, use this one http://www.adea.org/dental_education_pathways/aadsas/Applicants/GeneralInstructions/Documents/ADEA%20AADSAS%20Course%20Subjects.pdf from 2013

that is quite odd. Do they have a bio or bsc prefix? Or do they have some other sort of prefix?

wierd, my coursework lists Animal Diversity, Cell Structure and Function, and Plant Biology as biology. Keep calling...

lame question, but how do you find where they calculated your BCP? Is the coursework automatically edited once they go through it?

Sorry for the wall of text guys...

Basically the guy I talked to told me that this year they were implementing a new rule where anything listed as animal or plants would be listed as "other science". At that point I didn't know what to say or how to go about refuting his point... I'm not very good arguing my concerns, so I ended up saying thanks and hung up.

The prefix for my courses were ZOOL, BIO, CMMB, and BOTA. The zoology courses were animal physiology I and II which is the higher level equivalent of human physiology at the school. The bio course is the BIO prerequisite course that is needed for most schools. CMMB is developmental biology of animals. This is really getting to me because I had As in all of these courses so my BCP ended up going down .3 grade points!

Now that I see that there are other people who have had courses described as "animal/plant" listed under biology I'm getting more frustrated. Why would they list physiology, zoology and botany under biology if they weren't going to use it. Is this happening to anyone else?

Can you guys give me some advice on what to do? I don't know where to start. Right after I had the phone call I sent them an email stating my courses again and included an attachment of the course examples.

BCP is listed under GPA calculations. It's the first GPA you see.

oh i meant how you know which classes they chose to calculate into your BCP, did you end up calling them to find out?

It's annoying because the new list that was posted for 2013 says under "Other sciences" that Animal sciences and Plant sciences in any department would be considered for that category. But under Biology it says that Zoology and Botany are both biology. Doesn't Zoology = animal sciences and botany = plant sciences? It's kind of contradicting.

BCP if I recall correctly is bio chemistry physics so anything listed as those will be calculated as BCP.

I'll be honest given those prefixes. I think you have an uphill battle.

I doubt you will win with the classes that start with Zoo. The bio classes should be automatically given to you. The CMMB is a bit of a 50/50. I know at my under-grad we had developmental bio classes that were under their own separate thing. They were mainly taken by nursing students, and they were much easier than their BIO equivalent. I am not sure what bota is. I'll be honest I wouldn't worry too much about GPA. Most schools recalculate GPA that ADDSAS gives them from what i've heard. As long as you make it past the initial screening process.

The thing is, my other zoology courses as well as a plant ecology course are all listed under biology. They all have the prefix ZOOL or BIOL. All of these courses have been upper level bio courses at my school. CMMB is an upper level cellular and microbiology course. BOTA is botany.I mean I would be okay with it if they hadn't listed Zoology, Botany and Cell microbiology under their biology section. They're basically contradicting themselves if they count some of my courses as biology and others as not...
Should I try to get in contact with a supervisor if I don't hear anything back from my email?
I don't want to spend anymore time dealing with this right now because I write my DAT in 2 days :|

But Zoology is clearly listed under Biology in the GPA department. So why would that not count? And I'm guessing Bota is botany which is also listed under Biology.

What departments offer the courses? Last year, at least, that was the deciding factor (as to whether a class fell into BCP or Other Science).

I am not a adcom member or work for AADSAS so my opinion doesn't matter

I can speak for my school, and I know we recalculate GPAs.

Moving on, I believe the computer will look for a BSC or BIO or some other prefix like that in its accepted BCP GPA. The problem is that those BCP classes he took did not have the accepted prefix. Someone looked at the prefix chart, and what the person had did not match the accepted BCP chart.

Call and send an email after that your options are kind of limited. Good luck.

At my school, the department offering all of these courses was the biology department. I am a re-applicant and last year, all these courses were listed under biology so thats why I knew that my BCP had changed. The guy I talked to said he talked to the person doing the verification and that all courses containing a course title with the words animal or plant was changed. I'm going to try to call again on thursday if they don't email me back by tomorrow and try to get in touch with a supervisor or something.

@ theleatherwalle may i ask what school you go to?
Thanks for the input guys.
