Hey guys, do you think adcoms look at your BCP gpa or do they focus on the science gpa? I’ll be starting my 5th year in undergrad and I’m trying to decide if I should just take higher level bio, physics, biochem courses to increase my BCP gpa or if I could take a few computer science courses and increase my science gpa that way. Do you think it’s ok to have a discrepancy between those two gpas? Do any schools have BCP cutoffs? Thanks!

Obviously, both GPAs are very important. The answer may depend on the school. I have a 2.94 science GPA and a 3.43 BCP (I was an engineering major). I think my BCP was significant in helping me gain acceptance to UNC, as well as good DAT scores. If your BCP is high, I would take whatever you want, although higher level bio or chem courses would definitely look better on your application. If your BCP is low, then I would take some BCP courses to raise it.

At my UCLA interview, one of the interviews had 4 things listed on the paper in front of him;
Overall science-
PAT-
BCP- This I was very happy about - not overall science
Overall GPA-

Other school interviews had the numbers memorized, better than I did. Including trends! They must have a lot of time on their hands :laugh:

What is the BCP and how is that differnet from the science gpa? I thought that in dent school, it was your overall gpa and your scinece gpa?

BCP = biology, chemistry, and physics courses. Your science gpa includes the BCP courses but also other science courses such as math, computer science etc. On aadsas they break the gpas down into: bio, chem, phys, BCP, science, non-science, and overall. I don't know how much weight dental schools place on BCP gpas...but science and overall are the most important

What is the difference between BCP AND SCIENCE GPA? Sorry guys, I'm just kinda starting out with thsi and I'm a little confused on how dent schools calculate your gpa. Clarifcation/resources would really REALLY help!

BPC is bio, physics, chem - many people look at bpc as a way of checking how you are doing on these major courses vs your bs theater, music, business 100 etc.

Science GPA would include BPC plus probably all natural sciences...maybe comp sci/math. I'm sure people look at your grades in science courses vs easy stuff but they dont like calculate it as they do with BPC.
