Hi,

Anyone interview at the OTHER programs (ie the BID, BU, NEMC/Tufts) in Boston? If so, I'd appreciate any thoughts. Even hearsay would be welcome. 😉

Well Mr P, NEMC has a pretty good neuropathogist, Dr Adelman (I think that's how you spell it). I haven't met him but have been to lectures by him and talked to residents who worked with him. A great teacher. A couple of the faculty at UMass trained at NEMC, they say it was a good place to train, kind of a small program, they worked 'em pretty hard. NEMC is a nice hospital (except financially) but the surrounding area is not the prettiest, the nicest, or that representative of Boston (Chinatown).

BU (The Mallory Institute or some such variation on Mallory's name) I don't know much about. I don't think their program filled this year, and again, it's small. And, as you probably know, the BU med ctr is not the most prime real estate.

BIDMC is certainly in a nice location. Walking distance to Fenway. However the program suffers a bit (in some opinions) by being one block from the Brigham. There are some great teachers there, but from what I have heard the residents kind of play second fiddle to the fellows (residents sign out with fellows, fellows sign out with attendings for the most part). It's a big program, 8 or 9 new people per year, busy. Clin path I have heard different things, some say good, some say bad. Many people, in fact, say if you want clin path or private practice training you should stay as far away from Boston as possible. I think that is somewhat changed now though. Facilities are also a bit old and cramped in true old hospital style.

I don't think you have to worry primate. I think you'll do well in the match.

Ad Astra.

I believe Dr. Adelman is no longer teaching.

He was recovering from CVA last time I heard.

I hadn't heard that...The lectures I heard from him were in mid may 2004. Which was more recent?

May 2003.

So I guess he is back teaching.

I am glad.

Thanks for the info, Yaah. I'd love to be back in the Hub, but I don't know if the right combo of rigor and "lifestyle" (I'm beginning to hate that word, even as I recognize its importance) can be found. I don't think working until 11 or 12 each night and half the weekend is the bar for solid training, nor is living in a hovel for $800k my idea of a valuable life experience. Said another way, having multiple dependents on a resident's salary in Boston is tough. 😛 Perhaps I'm wrong. Time will out, I suppose.

At least there are good soft pretzels here. 😉
