allright, here is the problem, I'm tryin to do decent on PAT but I don't know how to study for it?
I have problem with key hole, top-front-end, hole punchin, and paper foldin( I don't know if I'm supposed to fold inward or outward??) would you please help me out and give me some tips about PAT thingy..and I know that I need to practice more but I don't have any Idea and I don't know any tricks to this section....It drives me nuts. 😱 😡 😡 😡

I would really appreciate your help

hey, for paper folding, just fold outward, I think...study the rest of the sections wth kaplan stuff and then do the DAT achiever to try the hardest...remember to always focus and you WILL get it...GO ALI KARIMI... 🙂

Go to your local Barnes and Noble, read Barron's PAT section (take notes if needed) and put it back on the shelf. Barron's explains PAT strategy well.

are u sure it's outward???? can someone cofirm this plz?????

Nope. And it has to be folding inward. The key to solving this section is not to fold the entire thing into a 3D object. Just choose a reference side & pay attention to its neighbors. If it fits, then that's the answer.

That depends on if you're talking about hole punching or 3d object.

In hole punching you always fold out of the page, with 3-d object it should be obvious...

well, I was talkin about paper folding..so it's inward right????

key-hole = the holes are supposed to be to-scale. Look for size discrepancies or shapes that are not the right distance from corners or edges.

top/front/end = eliminate one answer choice at a time, comparing each with the two views given. Count the number of lines (solid and dotted) in each and eliminate those choices with too few or many.

angles = identify largest and smallest and rule out answer choices from this. If forced to look at the middle two, try to picture one fitting inside the other -- but don't be fooled by the length of the rays.

cube counting = Using scrap paper to keep track, 1. Count total cubes 2. count the number of sides for each cube and make sure every cube from step one is accounted for (some cubes will have zero sides painted) 3. Only after doing this should you answer the questions.

hole punch = work backwards thinking mirror-images as you go. Use real paper if you need to practice perspectives.

3D shapes = rule out answers by eliminating oddly shaped sides (those not present in the flattened example) and by looking for shades and shapes that don't match up (eg: facing towards a certain side when it should be facing away).

Otherwise, just practice (what with, I don't know... I'm frustrated by PAT practice question errors right now, as one of my posts explains) and focus on elimination. The PAT is very doable.

Yes, you're right, Ali. What often confuses people is that Paper Folding (original title for hole punching) is commonly used for the last section of the PAT, i.e., Form Development. Trust the OPs here by going through Barron's basic strategies and eventually challenge yourself with DAT Achiever. You can't go wrong in choosing these guides for your solid PAT prep, although DAT Achiever far surpasses Barron in other areas like its challenging scinece problems, accuracies, computer simulations, etc.

WRONG!!!

THink about it, if you fold outward, towards you, you wil have all the shading on the inside of the object and the entire outside will be WHITE!

YOU MUST fold into the page, inward, and then rotate the object.

The best way to do this is look at choice A, find a unique shading or marking, like an X across a cube or half of the face colored. Then find the same unique face on the origina question image and then rotate around that to see if it matches to the rest of the faces of choice A, if it does you got the answer, if not go on to B.

If you practice you will be doing this pretty fast.

If the question has just a weird object that you need to fold, with no shades or markings then pick the unique face (the most odd looking) and match it to one of the choices.

For hole punch, the best learning tool is taking a square paper and following the folding and then putting holes and unfolding it to see where the holes end up. BUT, don't rely on this, just use it for the questions that you are having trouble with and carefully examine it as you are folding, so you can see it next time.

Good luck!

I found Kaplan's tips on the PAT section to be very useful. After I got my strategies down what most helped me was a LOT of PRACTICE.

what are kaplan's tips? 🙂

Well, it has been a year since I've taken the exam but here is what I remember:

For cube counting- count the number of rows then write the 'types' of cubes you have in each row. For example: row 1 has a cube with 2 faces showing, a cube with 3 faces, and a cube with 4 faces (row 1: 2, 3, 4) ... etc. Then you go to the questions and look at your list.

There were also some helpful ideas about the front-top-end. For example, the number of 'events' on the bottom of the top surface should = the number of 'events' on the top of the bottom surface. Or something like that. Just look for patterns.

For angles, you may be able to tell the difference if you imagine which ones fit into each other.

That's all I remember for now.

The PAT is very 'doable' as someone already mentioned. All you need is practice

I agree with Frantino about finding out strategies of your own.

here is a great cube counting strategy:

first count all the cubes so you have a grand total.

then make a chart 0-5 representing the number of faces on the cube:

0/
1/
2/
3/
4/
5/

then systamatically look and count each cube and put a line next to the corresponding # of faces showing. in the end it should look something like this:

0/ I
1/ III
2/ II
3/ IIII
4/ II
5/

then count to make sure the number of lines you have match the total # of cubes that you counted. and then you can answer all the question.

practice and you will be doing this part pretty fast with 100% accuracy.

good luck and hope my explanation made sence.

Hi:
First of all, in paper folding it has to be inward.Don't listen to all the others with their conditional sentences. It's inward ,period.
