Hi all! I'm applying this June and was just wondering about the process of getting accepted and being waitlisted. Let's say I'm accepted at School X but really want to attend School Y in which I'm waitlisted at. Can I hold on to my spot at School X after May 15th and withdraw from there if School Y pulls me off their waitlist in the summer?

Thanks!

All that is required on May 15th is that you release all your ACCEPTANCES. You may hold onto as many waitlists as you wish ... which means that, should School Y pulls you, then you can go there and withdraw from School X.

Well I would recommend not releasing ALL of them because then you will be stressed since you will have no where to go. Hold on to at least one. 👍

OOOPS ... crap, sorry, yes, hold on to one .. this is what happens when you browse SDN at 3 AM in the morning. SORRY! 🙁

Thanks for the info! I was just worried about having to give up an acceptance at one school in hopes of getting pulled off a waitlist at my "dream" school. So by May 15th, I can only hold on to one acceptance? Do you have to put a non-refundable deposit down at the school you plan to attend even though you are hoping to attend another one? Also, is there a deadline in which you can withdraw from a school to accept a waitlist acceptance at another?

There's just so many random questions running through my head in this crazy process. It is definitely flying by though. Thanks again for the responses. I really appreciate all the patience!

Question 1: You seem to understand correctly. After May 15 you may hold no more than one acceptance.

Question 2: Depends on the school. Some require non-refundable deposits to hold your aceptance. Some don't. If XYZ university offers you a spot and requires a deposit, you can either accept and send it in or choose not to accept. The fact that you hope to go somewhere else is not likely to convince anyone not to take your money.

as for a deadline for the latest time that you can withdraw from one school to go to a school where you got in off the waitlist, typically you cannot withdraw from a school once you begin some sort of activity for that school (ie, orientation, first day of class, etc). so depending on the school that you're in to, this might not be until september. or it might be as early as july.
