Hello, stupid question (I should know this by now!) but what are the belts on white coats used for? And I have to have my white coat custom made due to my size, will it be unreasonable for me to choose not to have a belt on it?

I;ve actually never seen a short coat witha belt before so i'm not sure i even know what you are talking about.
Even so, I think the short coat will look kinda wierd with a belt. The long one may be better suited for using a belt.

OP - do you mean the belt in the back of the coat? If so, it's just there for decorative/fit purposes (some of them allow you to button the belt so that it's tighter and fits closer to the body), and is not necessary. My short white coat that I had as a student did not have a belt, and the one I have on my coat now is purely for decorative purposes.

the belt thing seemed to be on the coats for females. I'm sure there are dudes that wander around with them as well, but I never really see that. As mentioned above, it is there to make it fit better. It always seems to upper waist to emphasize curves a bit more? (Question mark intended)

I thought those were only used in tv shows. Not that I know my arse from my elbow but in the academic hospital I work in I have never seen a belt. They are sold in ALLheart as the "Greys Anatomy" coat. Oh brother..

I wear a belted one, because that's the style of my school's official coat, and yes, this post is useless without pics 😉

The belts are to signify your level.
Pre-meds get white belts.
Med Students get yellow.
Interns get green.
Residents brown.
Attendings get black belts.

Just don't forget to bow before entering and exiting the wards.

The boys have to wear belted coats too, I was just noticing today how stupid they look.

And we also have Dr. 90120-style extremely fitted black scrubs, which I've been teased about on SDN already. Is it a Latino thing of showing off the body?

This was where my mind went first as well... I frantically searched through the posts to see if I got there first. Missed it by 5 days, though! 😎
