Hello friends,
I wanted to open this new thread to discuss our questions and doubts about the upcoming California schools bench tests n interviews. Anyone with a previous experience please share their words of wisdom🙂

My questions :
1) What all exercises are included in the bench test.
2) What type of typhodont and teeth are provided.
3) What is the amount of time given for each exercise.

Practice MOD for Amalgam prep (on lower and upper both), PFM on central, canine, premolar of maxillary and a gold bridge.

Time-I do not remember exactly, but it might be 4 hours for 2 or 3 preps.Depends.

Teeth-Few ask for kilgore and few for columbia.

is it enough if we practise on one of them,Kilgore or Columbia?if so,which would you suggest? Are they very different?

Every year school comes up with new ideas . but more or less then want to test your art skills rather than making perfect class 2 or crown prep. They want to see whether your concepts are clear or not. You should know everything a practicing dentist knows because your are applying for a program for internationally trained dentist. They don't want to teach you class 2 prep or gold crown cutting. They just want to teach you their technique of doing it so that you can modify your current skills in that way.

you should prepare for class 1,2,3,4,5 alloy cavity preparation. Mainly higher chances are for class 2 only but still you should know all other . you should know to convert this prep to composite restoration prep even though none of the schools have asked so far. But school likes to give a little surprise.

You should prepare for metal crown, PFM crown and all ceramic crown. Most chances are for metal and PFM.

You should also learn to cut bridge. Last time USC asked for a bridge prep.

USC, Loma linda and UOP gives columbia typodont while UCSF prefers Nissin Kilgore typodont. If you don't want to practice on both then I would say practice on Columbia because most school prefer coolumbia and it is little hard to cut. Kilgore teeth are softer and easy to cut. If you are good with columbia then you will be good for kilgore also. Remember UCSF gives 4 days practice session before exams so you can refine your prep on kilgore in those 4 days.

Time for the prep varies on the school on the prep. But it will be sufficient enough to prepare within time limits.

Teeth size are almost the same. But columbia are little hard in compare to Kilgore. YOu can not interchange them. it means you can not insert kilgore teeth on columbia and visa versa. Columbia teeth are yellowish so I personal feel it is easy to define margins on columbia teeth than whitish kilgore teeth. But in the end it doesn't matter a lot.

Good luck with the preparation guys. keep your fingers crossed for the interview call.👍

hiii,

Search for "Portable Dental Turbine Unit" on ebay - you'll find many options at competing prices

here's one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-Dental-Turbine-Unit-Work-Compressor-4hole-/150482123106?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item23096ef962#ht_4046wt_956

You can find the Unit with or without Handpiece

I suggest to look for 4 hole compatible Unit and a 4 hole push button handpiece

In ucsf, the bench exam is gonna be on the menniquine or the typodont?

Can anyone please guide me how to make a MOD amalgam preparation on a maxillary molar? Should I include the oblique ridge? And, Should I include the lingual fissure? :scared:

do NOT include the oblique ridge and the the lingual fissure in either class I or II. Only include oblique ridge if >1mm is left between distal and mesial pit

BigSmiles,

I thought we should probably not include the oblique ridge and lingual fissure at all times. Can you tell us why we should include oblique ridge if >1mm is left between distal and mesial pit? Forgive me but I really do not know...

If the oblique ridge is undermined by less than 1 mm remaining then we should include it...that is the rule in order to ensure strength of the tooth to remain intact.

Guys you are talking about natural tooth caries. In typodont there is no 1mm rule? eithr you make conservative MOD which does not include oblique ridge. Its more like separate MO and DO. But school might want to test you on conventional MOD which includes oblique ridge. You must confirm with the current students in the school to learn about their preference in exams.

I am a current student student in reputed school krishdentist. I would say it would be a 'uhh duhh' moment to assume there is caries on a PLASTIC tooth , hence, no undermining, no connection of MO w/ DO....just saying.

Hello krishdentist I don't understand your point here. You said conservative MOD does not include the oblique ridge. But how can be that possible? I mean if you prepare MOD you will have to include occlusal surface and that will connect both mesial and distal pit. so, you are anyway going to include oblique ridge whether it is conservative or conventional, right?

I have the same doubt. When it is asked to preserve the oblique ridge, but the diagram shows a connecting MOD then how does it work? and what about if it's an onlay?

If you make it Class-2 MO and DO separate amalgam preps it is still a variation of MOD even if you dont include the oblique ridge. This is a clinical point of view and called conservative MOD. Because caries might have not spread to oblique ridge and if the closest distance in between both MO and DO is more than 2mm then you dont have to include oblique ridge. But in schools they want to test you on conventional MOD prep not on 2 separate class 2 preps. In conventional MOD please break oblique ridge and include it in preps. Dont get confused guys. If it is a University practical exams for MOD then please include oblique ridge in your prep .

Could someone please help me. I have a question regarding UB's bench testing in preparing a mandibular premolar tooth for an abutment for a 3 unit FPD. The preparation should be PFM (shoulder+ chamfer) or all ceramic? if it is in PFM do I need to make a wing?

Please help.....

From whatever I know here are a few suggestions about the things you will need to practice at home:-(check out for all these on e-bay,sdn or even craig's list and the respective sites.)
A note:_ When you buys things from e-bay,make sure they are shipped from the US and not China, even if you have to pay a little extra... Otherwise it will be difficult to return in case of some problem.)

1.A compressor and a dental turbine unit(which has a footpedal and attachments)-If you're in an apartment you'll have to get a silent compressor. You may need oil for your compressor too,in case it's not an oilless compressor.

2.A High speed handpiece and Handpiece lubricant(I feel it'll help in extending the life of your handpiece)

3.Typodont (Columbia or Kilgore- depending on the schools you're applying to- I personally find Columbia better to practice on,better morphology and easier on the eyes.IF you're going to buy one try to buy one with soft gingiva. If you already have one, just practise on that to save money. Some schools ask you to have your own typodont for the bench test)

4.Extra teeth- more of molars and incisors(IF you're on the west coast,it might be easier to get it shipped from UOP or other dental school stores or you can order from the Columbia or Kilgore sites though it may take more time for shipping)

5.Burs(you will probably need Diamond:- 847 K- 016 and 012,856,888-012,878 K-012, Carbide:-256,56,169,170,171,368,330 and of course any of you favourite burs) You can order from http://www.brasselerusa.com/brass/index.cfm or get from the dental school stores.

6. Hand instruments:Mouth mirror,#5 explorer,gmts(10-80-10-16 and 10-95-10-16),hatchets (10-7-14,15-8-14)

7. A typodont mounting pole (that rotates 360 degrees)on which you can practise for bench tests on mannequin.

That's
about it.. you're ready to go..

I'm trying to get into the above site but it says its only for the invited readers. All I'm looking for is the list of things needed to practice for the bench test from home. Please someone shed some light.

Thank you.

I tryed to access this blog too, and I'm not allowed now. I've been following it for some time, and it was extremelly helpful. I hope there is somebody there that could help me access it again.
Thanks!

Hi, do I need to get a compressor in adittion to the portable dental unit? and if I need it, how much it can cost?
Thank you for your response.

You can search on eBay and Amazon for dental compressor. Here are few links:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dental-air-...ltDomain_0&hash=item2317bbfa08#ht_1851wt_1016

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-Oi...ultDomain_2&hash=item5890d35c41#ht_1302wt_784

http://www.amazon.com/Medical-Noise...MA22/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324350062&sr=8-1

As people pointed out, think about getting noiseless if you are living in apt. Although I was living in apartment, I used noisy one because of cheaper price and I used to put it in closet to reduce noise and it worked well 🙂
