what constitute good/benign work hours in an anesthesiology residency?

I'm hearing that most programs average 60-65 hr/week with longer hours (approaching 80hr) for busy services such as ob or during your SICU month. Is this what people are talking about when they talk about good work hours?

Put Mayo Rochester on your list as well. My life is pretty darn sweet right now. It feels like I have a part-time job when I look back at my intern year.

I really don't know what constitutes great hours since this is my first rotation, but UKansas-KC is known for pretty good hours and the attending staff is great! I think UKans - Wichita isn't bad either. But you must all remember . . . . .. . you will BE IN KANSAS!!!

Look on an old post. I heard people talking about UTMB, NYC-Columbia and Stanford as having great hours and perks for staying late, and not much weekend call.

upitt supposedly has good hours.
i am in the middle of an away at SLU and they seem like they have good hours.... CA 1 seems to be 6-7 a.m. to 4-5 p.m. and only one weekend is involved a month. the residents seem great about relieving each other for breaks etc. and doing each others preops if need be.

The hours at Columbia are reasonable but not quite cush.
Milstein (general OR) rotations 55-65 hrs/week. Most days out by 4:30-6 after pre-ops. Overnight call 2x/month. Significant short calls (>7pm) 2x/month. If a CA-3 o/n call is as team captain 4pm-7am.
OB 75-85 hrs/week. My last rotation I did 290 hrs for the month.
Peds 60-70 hrs/week. No o/n call unless a CA-3. 2-3x/month. Short calls where you stay as late as 7pm-o/n 1-2x/wk. Usually you're out by 9pm.
Cardiac 60-80 hrs/wk depending on how many people are on rotation. In the future likely to be closer to 60 due to large numbers of fellows (7 next yr).
Pain 40-50 hrs/wk clinic/pedspain/inpatient chronic. 50-60 hrs/wk on acute pain.

Any idea what are the hours for peds anesthesia fellows? Thanks.

Similar to residents, except they do all the weekend calls. Call is from home, but can be very busy. It's not uncommon to have case after case, all day on a weekend, or all night during the week. I'll see if I can find out from a fellow what they average.

@ Sinai our first yr is damn good so far. We have 4-6 overnight calls per month.. during which i have gotten more sleep than i get at home (6-8hrs uninterrupted). This is my individual experience, although i have heard others voice the same, while a few said that they ran into some tough call nights.

Avg day u r out by 4pm give or take an hr. The one down side to it is that the schedule for the next day usually comes out btwn 5-6pm... most residents live nearby so they dont have to stick around to wait for it- they can just check it at home on a kickass website that was created for faculty and residents alike. In all honesty, inpts that require a preop the day before surgery make up like 10% of the surgical pool... i have only had to come back to do preops maybe 5 times altogether in the 3mos i have worked here.
As a first yr, u can make extra money by staying after 4pm. if u stay till 7 or 8 pm and discussed it with the attending on call- u get $300 for your efforts. the longest i have stayed without being on call was 6pm and that was once... otherwise i have either gotten relieved in a timely fashion or taken a paid short call. This is how its been for the first 3 mos... it may change, so take everything i say with a grain of salt... but i am very pleased that i chose sinai over the other big names in the northeast.
2nd and 3rd yrs have many more ways to make money but ill leave that for another time when i am more familiar with the exact figures rather than saying anything erroneous. There was one resident that recently graduated that expressed that he had made $120k+ (not sure about pretax or not) during his last yr here. This was confirmed by several other people... all of who said that this person practically lived in the hospital.

I am so jealous! the average day at my program is past 6pm, with no perks for staying late. you are just as likely to stay past 7pm as you are to get out before 4pm

This is going to sound like a real dick thing to say, but ...

You shouldn't pick a program based upon work hours being benign. You don't want to be there until 6 pm every night, but you shouldn't go to the place that will have you out by 2 every afternoon.

That being said --- Mayo Rochester has quite possibly the best hours out there
