Just like the EK Verbal 101 thread, this is a thread to talk about how you're doing with the TBR passages. I don't know how people are generally going through these, but I'm doing Phase I and II after reading the chapter, and saving Phase III for after I finish all content review.

I'm currently working on Gen Chem.

Chapter 1:
Phase I: 27/41 = 66% = 10
Phase II: 10/20 = 50% = 8 (ouch!)

Chapter 2:
Phase I: 29/37 = 78% = 11
Phase II: 28/33 = 85% = 13

So far I LOVE the book. I hated Gen Chem and I'm enjoying reading this and I really feel like it's helping me grasp the topics. Hopefully future chapters will continue this trend...

Now it's up to you guys! Keep this thread alive!

General Comment - a healthy lifestyle is critical to good MCAT performance (at least for me). The last couple of days, my sleep schedule has been a bit wacky, and I have seen the deterioration in motivation and concentration.

Gen chem was on par with my previous performance. I'm really curious as to how the BR scale will translate to the AAMC FLs.

Well, there was a definite improvement in the 2/3 passages of buffers and harmonic motion. Still too embarrassed to post the scores next to the heavy hitters in there though. 😉

I just did the first third of the ochrem chapter of nitrogens in the book 2.
I scored a 60% (9) and I find I usually score 60-70 percent. Usually very lower 60s

I know BR is harder than the aamc but I'm not sure if a 9 on BR correlates to a 9 on aamc, I'm wondering if someone can shed some light.

Also what are some ways I can improve my scores because I do want to do better on all my subjects, AT LEAST scoring 70%

As for the improving, you must be doing heavy review of your mistakes made on the passages. As well, you should be going over the ones you got right to ensure that your thought process was correct for the question. This takes time, but it will pay off.
I've been scoring around the 11-12 range with the odd 9/10 and 13/14. When I do get a 9 or 10 I review the mistakes, go through the logic, review the concepts, ask my self why I got it wrong, and then when I feel as though I could handle another set of passages I go at it. I have seen success especially in physics (e.g. Chp 5 Phys 1/3= 9 to 2/3 =14 (95%) 🙂 ).

With that being said, I have a lot of work to do in Chem!!

Good luck!!

Daily update 6-19
Verbal has been pretty good, last 7 passage groups have been 72-96% with only 1 missed question in the last 4 passage group. Doing daily science and VR passages together as a mini FL.

O Chem was on carbohydrates, which were covered for less than 1 lecture in my undergrad O Chem and I haven't taken Biochem. Undergrad Bio covered a bit of physiology (2-3 weeks) but I haven't taken Physiology. These are both pretty much new topics and I got hit hard. The last few weeks of content review will probably be on most of my weakest subjects. There is a lot of opportunity to improve. Also, the BR Bio book 1 scale is tough!

As usual, orgo is my strength (it probably also helps that I just finished biochem, which means carbs, proteins etc. are really fresh).

Verbal: I seem to have hit a rut with my scores, maxing out at about 10 for the last 3 practice tests. Any tips on how to push past this? I feel like it is harder to improve in verbal because there is nothing really to "review"
I am going to start reviewing the passage right after I take it, because I often forget my reasoning behind picking an answer choice the day after. Any thoughts?

Hopefully these logs can be useful to future studiers, with all this data on how we perform in BR, I will include the practice AAMCs and then the real deal. It will hopefully provide some good references to help estimate where you might score.

If you are a fellow BR user I would encourage you to post your info as well, even if it is just overall percentages by subject and AAMC scores. More than a couple data points could be very helpful.

I guess I will join in here. Just about finished reviewing content and doing Phase I for each of the sections of all four sciences. I haven't done much of anything by way of verbal preparation yet- just took AAMC 3 verbal section to get a feel for it and see what I would score. Wound up with an 11 but felt very uncomfortable throughout.

For what its worth, my approach was to read and take notes on all chapters in a given book and then go back and do the Phase I questions for all chapters in the book. For the most part the info was still pretty fresh in my head though.

I will update this with the rest of the Phase I scores when I take Bio chapter 10 and get Chem 1-5 which I do not have with me right now.

Question about the verbal in the full-length tests.. is it just me or are they A LOT easier?? The passages are super short, the questions are just checking if you read everything rather than requiring you to really think about it...
I took my first BR FL and got an 11 on verbal--I'm a retaker but I rarely scored above 9s on the all the billion verbals I took. I don't want to let myself get too happy by this 11 XD

74% on Gases today. Feel really comfortable with that content. Now if I could only pass that over to other sections..

I got a 74% on that section today too! Was it just me, or were some of the calculations pretty brutal?

I'm relatively well versed in gasses, so they didn't seem too bad to me. Don't fret, though, as I'm usually blown away to an extent by other calculations from TBR (ie pH & buffers). :meanie:

Verbal was good, fluids/solids physics was straightforward. Doing daily science and VR passages together as a mini FL. Hopefully I can improve on the 2/3 O Chem and Bio passages on Saturday, feeling pretty good overall, but anxious to take an FL.

After finishing content review I'm looking at doing the AAMC self assessment so I can focus on my weaknesses the last few weeks in between FLs. Anybody else thinking of doing this?

Verbal: It fluctuates. I really want to get to the place were I never miss more than 1 question per passage, and have several perfect passages per section. Not there yet, but I'll keep working for it.

just to make sure im not missing out. Is there more to reviewing tbr exams other than just seeing which problems we missed? Is there not a diagnostic report of which overall sections we're weak on like it is for the aamc.

thanks

Nice work on the Bio and O Chem, you're killing it!

The secret for physics is that it just clicks with me and I have several years experience working as an engineer. I didn't use all of the topics professionally so I've had to brush up a bit, and probably more so on the electronics/optics.

I'm fairly certain I'm doing the AAMC assessment as soon as I finish with all content review, then taking AAMC 3. This will give me a chance to practice a boatload of AAMC style questions before my FLs, work on additional endurance for the FLs, and hopefully find some trends in my weaknesses so I can work on them for the last 3-4 weeks before the test. It may even be useful enough to consider throwing out an older FL (AAMC 4 or 5) if that is the only way to fit it in the schedule.

I can look through my old percents later if you guys want, but...
I got a 12PS and 11BS.

I think i was scoring in the 70-80 range for the most part in PS/BS. Better in PS. I got a few 13's on practice exams. BS was generally not as good, but I got 1-2 13's in practice there too. Referring to AAMC's.

Don't be freaked out by the numbers. Concentrate on the learning. Your %'s should improve with every run through of the material. Before doing passages, I would read through my notes again just to keep things fresh.

After doing three runthroughs of the material, the formula's just stuck in my mind. I wrote those all down in a notebook with condensed notes and read them when I had a few mins.

Good luck!

Just got blown up by Sound and Doppler. Awful. Basically going to do the chapter over again.

Check out the free 5 minute video on the doppler effect at http://www.jcoreview.com/

It may help to see it from a more visual perspective. BTW, I haven't purchased those videos but I watched the freebies and thought they were decent. It could be wise to use these to supplement your TBR studying if you're a visual learner.

I've got doppler down for the most part. I've actually got everything down except for waves through open/closed pipes, it seems.

I just get so frustrated by the questions some times. I read it and feel comfortable with the content, and then it asks about sound waves through a pipe in a damn vacuum. 🙄

Just trying to remember that since it isn't a full length, it is still considered content review, and I should learn from it just the same. I'm just normally used to being quizzed over the content I just read, not that obscure crap. 😴

It reminds me of a picture I saw on reddit that said " 1+2=3. 2+2=4. Solve for the mass of the moon."

But thank you for the video, I'll check it out.

Did most passages as mini FL (7 Physics and Chem passages then 10 min break, 3 verbal passages then 10 min break, 9 Bio and O Chem passages). Timing was solid but Bio and O Chem were still weak. Perhaps some of this was because they were last in the 134 question mini-FL, I was somewhat gassed by the end. Hopefully tomorrows Bio will improve to 70+%.

Daily update 6-26
Did Bio on Monday and Physics today. Bio went pretty well, totally bombed a physics passage (1/7) because I am weak on electronics/magnetism (haven't studied it in years). I am definitely hitting the stretch with my weaknesses. May end up looking at some online videos to supplement. This will be high yield study time.

Verbal is going well, I feel like I have a solid instinct for the EK now, getting an average of 33/40 on the last 5.5 tests. Which, when you include the 1 or 2 throwaway Qs per test with fairly bogus answers/explanations, I feel pretty good about. We'll see how this translates back to TPRH and the AAMCs. Also switched Bio to book 2 scales, 78% is not a 9 on those dang passages 😀

How is everybody doing on BR Bio from book 2? These passages are destroying me. Especially the metabolism sections.

Still working on verbal, its a constant battle. Nice to see that I finally broke 10 on the last TPRH practice test.

How are you all fitting in the MCAT Self Assessment? I'm thinking of doing it, but I'm not sure how to incorporate it into SN2ed's schedule. Any thoughts?

Did Chem today and it was straightforward. Verbal went bad on one passage but overall was decent. Physics passage review went well, made a number of simple mistakes, shooting for 80%+ on the second 1/3.

I'll be doing the Self Assessment after content review but before AAMC 3. I have my own schedule that is based off the SN2ed but I rearranged a few things to make it happen. To fit it in the SN2ed you could delete the hat trick day and spread out the rest over the last week of content review or you could delete one FL (~500Qs vs. 144 Qs) and still have 7 to use.

what is the consensus on these passages? Are people typically finding them harder than AAMC material? I know that EK 30 min exams are seen as typically harder than actual mcat material (as the author even points out in the beginning of the book). Just wanted to know if TBR rolls that way too.

I have done most of the EK and the BR passages are generally harder, so they are probably tougher than the AAMCs (which I haven't taken yet). However, to some degree BR's scale compensates for this (a 12 is 85-92% on an AAMC practice test, in BR it is 76-84%, an in EK it is 83-87%).

Daily update 6-30
Did O Chem today and Bio yesterday, Bio was good and O Chem had quite a bit of new material to me (Amino Acids and biochem stuff). Verbal was a struggle yesterday due to distraction, but today I hit my goal of 90+% and < 7min/passage for the first time.

I'm definitely ready to be done with content review and start the AAMC material.

Update 7-3
Did physics 9 and it was tough, had 1 passage that really got me, but a bit easier than 8. Had a heavy passage day today and finished up some school work this morning followed by a group of 9 passages, then after lunch I took a self assembled FL from the passages which was 54Q on Chem and Physics, 40Q in Verbal, and 59Q in Bio and O Chem. I was toast by the end of this thing. It was slightly longer than an FL and I had already done over 60 Qs and schoolwork all morning, I wouldn't recommend it. I was dragging by the end and my times went up by 1 min/passage and scores went down, especially Verbal.

I still have a lot of work to do on electronics/magnetism and probably carbs/biochem but should be wrapped up with content review in a week or so. Will probably tack 1/2 hour of studying these each for a few days and do some EK1001 over the next couple weeks (before FLs).

On average, on each type of passage of lets say 7 questions how many are you guys getting correct? I get around 5 or 6 correct out of 7 on average. But I sometimes get passages where i get like 3 or 4 out of 7 :/ anyone else deal with this?

absolutely. And this is usually where my percentages go down. Just try and learn from it.

Its been a while since I posted, life has gotten kind of crazy recently.
I've finished all content review, and I will take my first FL (AAMC#3) tomorrow. Some observations:

1) It is abundantly clear where my weaknesses are:
Physics: translations motion (which is weird...) and optics
Chemistry - Redox, some calculation heavy stoichiometry
Orgo: spectrometry
Bio: not sure, because I can't get a good read on how good my bio is because BR is so hard. The last couple of chapters have destroyed me.

I've seen some awesome improvement in verbal the last few days. It just seemed to click for me. Hopefully I can sustain it.

hey guys, quick question. I started the BR bio passages (kinda going through s2ned's method) but some of the passages have literally nothing to do with the chapter prior to it. I find myself guessing through some of it and end up getting 5/7 or 5/8 on each passage. Is this normal? I feel all the bio material is mish-moshed =X

Update 7-9
Did last chapters of all subjects except O Chem, which is tomorrow. Optics went well, but I was slow on the material, the physiology Bio is decent but not great, and the electrochemistry/redox are probably my weaker areas in Chem. Verbal is going poorly, several days I had trouble focusing then it seems like these last couple test are harder and more subjective than the rest. The trend is pretty discouraging. However, I only have one more EK test then I'm back to TPRH and AAMC stuff which will hopefully be a bit less ambiguous.

Overall, I'm pretty burnt out and am taking a vacation this week. Hopefully I'll be fresh when I finish my last passages on content review then to start the AAMC self assessments. I also took some passages from the AAMC's Official Guide to the MCAT. They seemed more convoluted and wordy than the BR stuff, definitely had some tough Bio experiments, and had a huge diversity of questions instead of focusing on a topic or two. Nearly all of the Qs I missed were in my weak topics.

Started doing the last 1/3, with mixed results.
AAMC3 went really well. I started out with a goal of 35, and I hit it on the first practice exam. Can't let up though, I know AAMC3 is the easiest of the lot. I feel like BR prepared me well, now I've just got to zero in on the weak areas and really start working on them.

Still struggling with Bio. Not sure what to do about it. I sure hope the actual MCAT is far less detail oriented and generally not as hard as BR 🙄

So the FLs have been going VERY well. I'm taking my scores with a grain of salt, given that they are the oldest AAMC tests and are not as representative as the later tests.

For those of you have gone through all the practice tests and have taken the real thing, how did your actual score compare to the early AAMCs? Hopefully they are pretty representative 😎

Update 7-16
Did the second thirds of my passages and have finished initial content review. Time off has definitely helped. Up next I am doing the self assessments then on to the FLs.

The Official Guide to the MCAT was a bit tougher than expected on Bio and O Chem, but it was also a shock to switch to a new material type. If anybody else has done these passages timed it would be interesting to see a scoring comparison. Targeted AAMC practice should hopefully bring the sciences to 13+ vs. 10-12.

QuantumFlame nice work on the FLs! I am hoping for results like those.

Maybe take the Official Guide passages since they are like the new test and we can get another data point for future testers...

Thanks! If I can get these kinds of scores on PS and BS, then you should knock the FLs out of the water! I didn't get the guide, but I'm debating getting the self-assessment package. I've got a ton of stuff to do in the lab, and time is kind of tight. We'll see.

How are you all doing on motivation? I feel like mine is cyclical. I feel pumped and 100% engaged during FLs, but then the two days afterwards, I have no motivation to study

Thanks- I sure hope you are right!

I'm feeling decent about the science sections but verbal still feels like a crap shoot to me. I'd like to hit a few more high 30s before I gain much confidence. I wouldn't mind going up a bit and hitting 40s like QuantumFlame (nice work btw) either.

The difference between a high 30 (like a 38) and a 40 is as much luck as anything. Getting a test with a more generous curve or knowing one random fact that is tested could be the difference. Be confident and get good sleep before your exam. You're going to do great!

It showed up in my last passages as I missed more in the them relative to the earlier ones. Left a couple VR, Bio, and Physics passages out to dry because I was so mentally exhausted by the end. There is a definite correlation between score and fatigue. Good to see this now and plan accordingly for my last month of prep.

My first FL is coming up soon and I think I'm going to make some adjustments to my schedule to focus most of my energy on my weaknesses and only do minimal review of my strengths.

Here's what I'm thinking:
-take only 1-2 passages per chapter of my strengths for review (not the whole last 1/3)
-add in 1-3 passages per subject chapter (Bio, Physics, Chem, O Chem) of a respective weakness
-switch all Bio to TPRH science workbook passages
-possibly use JCo videos to get another perspective
-minimize passage workload on non FL days to stay "fresh"

I've been feeling pretty burnt out the last couple of days. TwinsFan...excellent idea. I'm going to do the same. Focusing on weaknesses and doing passages in those areas seems to be a far more efficient way to study.

Btw...I swear I'm not making my verbal scores up 😎 I can't fully explain why it is happening, but I'm not questioning it lol

Hey if any of you guys are using the TBR CBTs I'm curious what scale you guys are using. I was sent one in my email, but I have another that has been posted on SDN and said to be the one given in the class. There are differences in some of the scaling where one is more favourable, so just wondering which is actually correct.
