Just like the EK Verbal 101 thread, this is a thread to talk about how you're doing with the TBR passages. I don't know how people are generally going through these, but I'm doing Phase I and II after reading the chapter, and saving Phase III for after I finish all content review.

I'm currently working on Gen Chem.

Chapter 1:
Phase I: 27/41 = 66% = 10
Phase II: 10/20 = 50% = 8 (ouch!)

Chapter 2:
Phase I: 29/37 = 78% = 11
Phase II: 28/33 = 85% = 13

So far I LOVE the book. I hated Gen Chem and I'm enjoying reading this and I really feel like it's helping me grasp the topics. Hopefully future chapters will continue this trend...

Now it's up to you guys! Keep this thread alive!

Hey guys, I'm diving into my TBR books come Monday and I was wondering what was considered a "decent" score on passages in all subjects but Bio (using TPRH for that). Thanks!

most people consider 65-75% give or take depending on your goals to be decent.

take a look at the lower pages of this thread to get an idea of the % 30+ get

I have been working through the BR/EK material, but I am really struggling with the material.
How long does it take you guys to review a BR chapter?? Any tips? I am nervous to jump right into the content because I am afraid to waste the BR practice material...

How much easier is CBT #1 compared to the rest?

The VR and BS sections are easier than the rest, but so far I thought the PS section of #1 was the hardest of them all (I've done 6 out of the 7 CBTs)

My scores in TBR bio and physics are terrible...What should I do?

Well the passages from the workbooks are really hard. I've noticed that I'm doing better on the CBT passages than the ones from the book. So I think you should be more worried about your FL scores than your scores on the workbook passages and just focus on learning from the workbook stuff. How are your FL's coming along?

It used to take me about 5 hours to go through 1 chapter. My most helpful tip would be to really focus on the example questions that are interspersed throughout the chapter. I usually found that really understanding those problems led to a higher passage score and better understanding of the material.

BR FL#6: 29 (9/9/11)

PS - This section was a bit tricky, I was kinda stressed throughout all of it. But I learned a couple of new things while reviewing it. A big problem I'm having on PS is that I don't remember some useful formulas or rules (i.e. solubility rules, trends, etc.). So I'm gonna try to incorporate more memorization for my review, hopefully that'll work.
VR - I've been noticing that when I take VR sections on the computer my reading isn't as effective. I'm a lot slower, and I don't highlight as well because I find it hard to do so with the mouse. I'm not too sure how to fix this, maybe read more stuff on a screen?
BS - This section went well, most of the topics were my strengths. While I was taking this section I was very relaxed and finished with 10 minutes to spare (on the other two I finished with like 1 or 2 min remaining).

Seems like I'm plateauing at the high 20's range. With a little more than 2 weeks left to study I'm not sure if I could hit my goal of 11/11/11 what do you guys think?

My scores so far:
BR #1: 27 (7/10/10)
BR #2: 32 (11/9/12)
BR #3: 29 (10/8/11)
BR #4: 27 (9/10/8)
BR #5: 27 (8/10/9)
BR #6: 29 (9/9/11)

I was wondering where you were! 11 in BS is great!! Will TBR FL #7 be your last FL or are you taking AAMCs as well? I feel like there should be a point increase for the AAMCs.

What were your overall average in bio and physics? I just started and I have only done a couple of chapters so far. My average in physics is about 65% and bio is 60%. I will start taking FL's at the end of April. I am taking the test in May. I want to get 30+ in the actual test but I will be happy with anything above 27.

😀 Yeah I took a lil break but now I'm back in full swing! I will be taking the AAMC's, probably 6/8 cus I'm not sure if I would be able to do all 8. I've heard that there is usually a point increase for the PS & BS sections, but I feel like I've gotten so used to the style of the BR passages that the point increase may not be substantial. Like a lot of the time I can guess the right answer and I think it's cus I've just taken so many BR passages - I can see thru their dirty little tricks!! lol!

For bio it was really dependent on the subject. Like for all physiology passages I would get 90%+, but for the molecular stuff and genetics I would score between 50-70%. For physics I would usually score 50-75%. I think your averages are fine, especially since you're just starting.

Just got through with with my second 1/3 of TBR for all subjects. Scored between 70-80% on every subject but bio which I scored around 25% on. I am using EK and TPR for bio review and the TBR passages are so out in left field for me. IDK what to do. Anyone else experiencing this frustration with the difficulty of TBR Bio. I don't understand why I'm doing so well in everything else but getting creamed when it comes to Bio.

BR CBT 1: 7/11/7
BR CBT 2: 10/11/6
BR CBT 3: 11/11/6

i am getting KILLED on bio every time. i dont know what to do about it because from a content point of view i feel like i know it. However these scores dont lie. i have not gone over CBT3 yet but i really felt lost in 2 passages literally guessing on some.

i already took the real freaking mcat on 9/11 and got a dang 9! i realyl do not like BR bio. i also took smoe GS CBTs and got and 8 on that bio. so idk....ill keep praticing. no point to postpone now 2+ weeks left!

I feel your pain on TBR Bio man. I am getting killed as well.

BR bio sucks plain and simple. Its often out of scope and really kills confidence. i will say i scored maybe 50% in BR bio so 25% seem a bit low even for bio. even still i wouldent freak out about it.

Maybe try to find alternative passage based pratice problems. I bought GS CBTs basicaly just for bio pratice. The GS CBTs are way nicer to use, it scores it for you and break down into subjects and if your using their books (i dont know anyone who does) it tells you the section you should review if you got a question wrong.

I wish BR did this, someone needs to wake BR up. Dealign with them and their outdated crap is the worst btw i almost lost it when i went to look somthing up in the index to find out it has no page #s....so its a bunch of mcat topics in alphabetical order what good is that?...just gota laugh

Some people cry about GS not being accurate to the real mcat..from my experence its as good or better then BR bio and WAY cheaper. if nothing else you get pratice material Good Luck

Thanks for the tips on GS. I got TPRH science workbook and going to do some passages out of there and see how well I do. If I bomb that as well then I know it's my problem. But if I do well on those, I'm gonna ditch BR for bio.I'll check out GS as well.

I studied using BR books and took the MCATs last Jan.

I recall getting destroyed on a lot of the later BR passages, but doing very well on the practice AAMC FLs and the real MCAT.

Overall, I would say that the BR passages tend to be a little more difficult than the real MCATs.

Just a little more difficult huh? Dang, well it sounds like that I need to get busy then. Did you review with TBR bio as well or just use it for the passages? I'm wondering if I should just dump the EK and TPR and review with TBR for bio like the rest of my subjects. I just keep getting mixed signals on TBR for bio. Some say it waaaay too detailed and then some say it's good because it's only a little bit harder than MCAT. But if that's the case, I need to use it or I am going to get killed!

If you have the time i guess it couldent hurt but to do a BR bio CH will take all day. i dont buy the argument "harder is better" i could get my phd in all mcat topics and do great.

Ugh. I'm spending all day as it is and I'm on the 4 month schedule. Good news is, besides the Bio section, it's really paying off. All the other subjects I'm scoring 70-80% 👍

Are you doing the 3 or 4 month SNed mcat study?
I haven't decided yet, I'll be writing in early July. I was going through the thread and I noticed that everyone is breaking down their scores into phase 1, 2, and 3 but when I looked at my TBR books the passages are one after the other and in one block.

That how the breakdown is for the SNed mact study schedule....I would recommend using that schedule....

CBT #1:

9PS/11VR/7BS

CBT #2:

10PS/6VR/6BS

What do I make of this? I scored a 27 on the last one and now I got a 22 wtf...😡

How tough are these compared to AAMCs?

CBT2 supposed to have a difficult VR so a drop is expected but 11-6 is a big drop.
id say one of those VR scores in an outlier. You gotta find out which one by taking more tests. maybe you got lucky on cbt 1 or had a bad day on cbt 2....no way to really know with out more testing

most people say BR CBT are a bit harder and to expect 1 or 2 ponts below AAMC

BR FL#7: 28 (8/10/10)

PS - Bombed 2 passages (2/6 & 1/5), other than that the rest went alright.
VR - Passages were more interesting which made it easier lol
BS - This is was hardest BS ever!!!! It was so convoluted and tricky. Definitely the hardest of BR in my opinion. I only got a 10 cus the curve was very generous lol

Well, I'm done with BR finally. Glad to be finished but not so stoked on the scores. Didn't really see much improvement either. My average of all the 7 exams is 28.4. I'm not sure if I could hit my goal of 33 on the real thing, but I'd be happy with a 30. We'll see how the AAMC's go, taking my first one in a couple of days!

My scores:
BR #1: 27 (7/10/10)
BR #2: 32 (11/9/12)
BR #3: 29 (10/8/11)
BR #4: 27 (9/10/8)
BR #5: 27 (8/10/9)
BR #6: 29 (9/9/11)
BR #7: 28 (8/10/10)

Update: I was pretty sick when I did my second third and it showed in my scores. Doing pchem made the gas law stuff a lot easier.

Hey everyone. I haven't posted in this thread since last summer before I took my first MCAT but since now I am retaking on 4/26, I will start posting again. I already did all of TBR passages last summer but since I didn't write in the book, I am now redoing these passages for my retake so my scores may be affected by prior exposure a little.

Like last time, I'm not doing the "phase" thing. I usually do these all the passages in one sitting 2-3 days after reviewing (since this is my retake) the chapter. Score conversions are based on the ones provided in the books.

So far:

Physics Section 6: Sound & Doppler Effect: 40/52 (12)
Physics Section 7: Fluids & Solids: 40/52 (12)
Physics Section 8: Electrostatics & EM: 43/52 (13)

How have you guys been doing? i just got rocked by BR FL 5 (i hear this is kinda normal). I am really interested to see how you guys are doing on the AAMC CBTs as i already took them my first go around.

Not too sure what to make of my bio scores...CBT 6 tomorrow

BR CBT 1: 7/11/7
BR CBT 2: 10/11/6
BR CBT 3: 11/11/6
BR CBT 4: 11/11/7
BR CBT 5: 7/7/7 (dont care, this test was crazy. hit all my weakest points)

Yeah #5 was a difficult one, but keep positive and review it like crazy! You have good PS scores, and great verbal scores. The BS on the AAMC's is easier, but not extraordinarily so. What types of questions or topics are you missing on BS?

I took AAMC#3 last week (10/8/12), and AAMC#4 this morning (9/9/11). I feel like the science sections are a little easier, even though I'm scoring about the same, but I think the verbal is a little more tricky.

Are you taking the test on the 24th or 26th?

I dont know what your expectations are but id be happy about those AAMC scores. Make sure you take the newer AAMCs. those science sections are harder.

My verbal scores are good but im "that guy" who just always did well in verbal from day 1. My diagonsitc VR score was a 10. i dont know why since i dont read too often (10 books a yr) and i am out of school ~5 yrs. I feel very fourtunate for these scores.

As for BS I get alot of the "identifying relationships" problems incorrect. So for example if an expermental passage asks "if we change XYZ about ABC and !@# decreased which resulted in 123 increasing what will happen if....." i just get lost and its over all topics so not content specific.

i do tend to have an extra 10 minutes on my BS section but not always. i was thinking about taking notes but sometimes a passage seems like you better know the relationships but when you get to the questions they are easy. Maybe Preview the questions? i never really used any type of technique i just read, answer and skip if i have to. what do you think?

i studied the hell out of bio after BR FL 5 so i hope it pays off. I taking the 26th what about you?

Holy fuk, I just did TBR physics chapter 3 work and energy passage 4 and missed every one!🙁🙁

It happens. I got 1/7 on one of the general chemistry passages.. Odd thing is that the answers felt very biased. Just keep pushing along and review why you got it wrong.

If your BS isn't content specific then it should improve with the practice of doing those experiment type questions. I do the same thing that you do currently, just read the passage and answer questions. I'm not sure if previewing the questions would help for BS, but I like the idea of writing down relationships on your scratch paper because a lot of those experiment based questions are about relationships. Just make sure you don't spend too much time taking those notes! But yeah you could try out both methods to see if you like them.

I'm taking it on the 24th, getting so nervous! I'm not getting to my goal of 33 so I might have to end up voiding, but we'll see how this week goes.

The equilibrium chapter in gen chem is a hard one.

Temp, how are you correlating your percentages with the 15 pt scale?

TBR scale is very generous. You multiply the percentage by 15 to get your overall score. Obviously you will get some decimal scores; but anything above a 0.6, I round it off to the next tenth.

Just took BR FL 6. 8/13/7= 28

PS: i was a bit surprised about my PS score. i felt like i did better got hung up on some electro chem. other wise just some random mistake here and there.

VR i felt like this one was eaisest VR yet. My score reflects it

BS: i didnt do great. I felt like the orgo was a little tough and alot of it. some of the descretes dont seem realistic...i wont give details but i felt like i needed to have certain things memorized that is unlikely to be on the real mcat.

my scores havent really improved which sucks but im ready to get this test done!

You're doing pretty good so far. Your bio score is excellent since BR bio is outrageous. I am having trouble with physics as well and I plan to buy Chad's videos next month. Hopefully these videos might help me increase my score in physics.

Thanks for the encouragement. I don't know if im just getting lucky on TBR bio or something but i haven't had too much trouble with it yet.. thank god. I've honestly been focusing more on PS but no matter what i do i always end up making some stupid calculation mistake or i simply don't understand the passage. I recently bought Nova's physics so i'm going to start doing that too.. hopefully it will help
