Given my time crunch, I was hoping to figure out which chapters of Goljan are relatively more skippable than others. It's a great book, I'm just running outta time!

In particular, I'm wondering about MS, Genetics, Environmental, and the Heme chapters, but in general, which chapters did you feel were high yield v time better spent elsewhere?

genetics and environmental definitely are not high yield. You will cover the important info from that chapter in your studies of biochem. I thought his heme chapters were pretty awesome. Makes all of the diseases very simple and easy to understand.

Musculoskeletal isn't tooooo important. Its pretty much all in FA.

I like the general chapters covering cell injury, inflammation, immunopath, & neoplasia. I think it covers those topics better than first aid.

Hemostasis, RBCs, WBCs, lymphoma/leukemia are the best of the systems based chapters.

Water balance, environmental, genetics, musculoskeletal, skin, nutrition, vascular, & reproductive are some of the lower yield chapters in my opinion.

Is goljan audio enough for heme?? or is the time better spent reading those chapters?

Heme is near the top for sure.

Agreed. He gives a lot of details about why you see the path findings that you do... things that I basically never even learned anywhere else. And.. love how he organizes it all.

Flip side, the water balance stuff I felt was a bit overkill. It's still great if you have the time.. but I felt it was kind of a dense chapter.

Btw... NUTRITION is not low yield!! There's a lot of biochem stuffed in there! Anyway, if you listen to Goljan, he even says this explicitly 😉 So... at least read the notes on the margin for that chapter.

I would even read the margin notes for the environmental chapters, etc. It doesn't take THAT much time just to read the margin notes.. and those are pretty easy chapters to go through... unlike the fluid/electrolyte stuff.

So I just started listening to Goljan Heme audios and was wondering if anyone knows if we really have to do a corrected reticulocyte count on step 1? I would assume it would be in first aid as one of the calculations.

Good question. I was wondering the same thing. I can't imagine them asking us that. But you never know

I haven't seen any corrected reticulocyte count problems in UW. It's not in FA and wasn't on either of the UW exams.

As far as heme goes... I liked the text better than the audio. There's a very logical way of thinking through heme questions and I think it's best if you can see it written on paper.

Can I just sidetrack a second and say I love your screen name? That's exactly how my brain feels at the end of the day of Step studying.

I actually think Goljan goes overboard with heme (which isn't really a bad thing) sometimes, but you're guaranteed to have SOME heme questions on the exam (I had at least 5) so it's a good thing to listen to.

thanks for the reply...already listened to all 8 audios lol. It took like 8 hrs at 2x speed while taking notes in FA but I think it was well worth it. Heme is one of my stronger subjects now (3 sets averaged 87% uworld) so even if the questions aren't as involved as goljan was...I should hopefully get them right.

Glad that worked out for you. I think it's definitely worth knowing b/c you can easily get 100% of heme questions right if you understand the heme workup.

thanks. yea like you said before - it's easier to understand it by seeing it on paper than purely listening to it...so I just followed goljan audio with FA and he really went through it almost in the same order in addition to adding a few higher order associations.

Do you recommend listening to the audios instead of reading the Female chapter? Or should I read it from BRS?

Thanks for all the responses and the compliment on my sn! 🙂 I have a few more specific questions.

So, I listened to his audio on the first few chapters (1-3). Did anyone do the reading and think it's worth going over if I've done the audio already? Also, thoughts on Neoplasia and Skin chapters anyone? I think I'll be skipping musculoskeletal since that seems to be the consensus but be doing Heme chapters.

Also, how much is there on eye/ear diseases not covered in FA? A LOT seems to be not covered in FA since our school had a course dedicated to each of those subjects .. Goljan has a few pages on it, but it's dense. HY or LY?

I read the female chapter from goljan awhile ago. It is very long and I don't know if it's worth the time considering the # of reproductive questions there are on step 1.

The audio is a good supplement to first aid. If you're getting closer to your test I would stick with first aid and the audio instead of the text. If you have time you could read the blue margin notes. Also, the pictures are really good in rapid review - take a look at those.

I don't know much about the BRS, so I can't comment on that.

I love the neoplasia chapter in goljan. It has all the info from the pathology section in FA but it explains things 10x better and makes more integrations.

The skin section in goljan is too bloated. The audio is decent for that section but not the best. First aid's skin section is skimpy, but skin seems to be a low yield topic anyways. I'd use the first aid to see what skin topics we need to know, then read those sections out of goljan. The pictures are much better too.

Thank you for the advice... I guess I'm gonna stick w/ FA, Blue Margins and the Audios... Good luck!!
