Backpack.

Everyone is different, and maybe you won't be the type of dental student who has to lug around articulators, casts, waxing equipment, books, notebooks, laptops, lunches, finals notes, etc. and all you will need is your two hands, a head, and a slim 1/2 lb tablet.

In case you do need to lug all that stuff around with you cause your dental school decided not to set up the lab, clinic, sim lab, and lockers right next to each other with moving hallways to carry you back and forth, I think a backpack is better.

Check your style meter until after dental school

Not a dental student yet, but the main things I would look for when shopping for a backpack:

-heavy duty zippers and buckles
-good stitching of durable material
-comfortable padded shoulder straps (and hip belt if applicable)
-enough room to hold laptop, books/notes, lab stuff, lunch, water bottle, change of clothes, etc.
-organizational compartments to keep the above items easily accessible
-ideally, a manufacturer that cares about customer service and product quality, and will replace/repair if anything goes wrong
-compression straps are a bonus

I'm probably going to use a Kelty pack that I've had for a few years, but I'm worried it might be a bit too large. I've mainly used it for traveling and hiking.

If I decide to invest in a smaller backpack for school, I'll probably go with a Kelty Redwing 32. I've been really pleased with the quality of my larger Kelty. I've also heard good things about The North Face Recon, but I have no personal experience with TNF packs.

I use the same Jansport I've had since high school.

my last jansport lasted for 10+years

when I have money I might buy a goruck, but they are crazy expensive

LL bean has quality back packs and has a life time warranty on any item. No matter what happens to the backpack (as long as you don't lose it) they will replace it with a new one brand new

lol imagine rolling (pun wasn't intended) up to dental school orientation with a roller backpack

Thinking of getting a nice quality north face backpack with a laptop sleeve, but will probably also continue using my jansport superbreak from time to time for quick trips or when I have smaller loads to carry

You laugh, but I got one for my girlfriend who insists on carrying 40 lbs of stuff all over the hospital resulting in a repeatedly strained back. They work!

They do work, but just know that your gf is now named "the rolling backpack girl"

I managed to hurt a disc in undergrad carrying a full backpack everyday. Now, after a full day of clinic or lab where I've been sitting and working, I can throw my feeble back out by simply wearing my backpack. Get one with the nerd straps and wear them. That little one that clips across the chest helps so much, as it distributes the load away from the vertebrae where I tend to hunch the most (yes, I know about ergonomic posture). It also gives me rocking man-boobs. If I have anything super heavy in there, like what I hauled around D1, I wear the waist belt too. Save your back. The good news is that you don't really have to take books with you to class, so the load can be a lot lighter. I use a north face because I was trying to impress a girl at the time I bought it. It's held up over the years.

Did you get the girl?

Unfortunately, I don't use any backpacks at my practice. I would recommend you to get a messenger bag. It's light and convenient.

north face recon is the ultimate choice. Had the recon from 2010 that still is awesome for even my day trips and camera days
