Best Books for Medical School

Hi all,

I am an incoming MSI and was wondering if anybody had some suggestions on very good/helpful books to get for medcial school. During undergrad, I remember getting some very helpful tips from SDN regarding studying for Orgo, using Organic Chemistry as a Second Language and Pushing electrons. I was hoping there might be some similar books for some of the big subjects in medical school. In particular, I am looking for books that help simplify the information, provide good practice questions, or just offer a generally good review. Any suggestions?

Get zero books. Maybe an anatomy atlas if you have to. First Aid and pathoma subscription 2nd year. If you buy any other books you're basically throwing your money away.

Oh..... Though, I will add I'm looking for supplements to use during the school year. I have no interest whatsoever in doing any pre-study.

I actually found Netter's anatomy atlas very useful plus it's a nice non-textbook-y thing to look at sometimes (*pretty pictures* ). Otherwise, my classmates have used BRS physiology as well. For my second year cardio block everyone read Rapid Interpretation of EKGs and of course most people had pathoma as well. Can't think of anything else that was popular. Almost everything we used came from our syllabus.

What are the course names/subjects that you have during the first 2 years?

I hated Netter. The pictures were too busy and idealized for me. I liked Rohen a lot better. It was a great last minute study tool for the practical as well because they were cadaver photos. I liked Grant's for the tables.

Something to point out is that you also don't need the newest editions as well. I paid less than $10 (shipping included) for my copy of Grant's.

How much do you think medicine changes every year? I used kaplan biochem from 2007 for step 1 and I'm reading brs peds from 2004 right now. Recommendations and first line medications change but the general principles are basically the same, especially for first year

I'm surprised they haven't revised that book. Last edition was 2004?!? Yet Costanzo's Physiology gets revised every 2-3 years for a flashier cover and change in font but no actual change in content.
