I bought a Dell 6000 about a month ago with a 1.6 GHz Pentium M processor, 512Mb single dimm RAM, 80Gb hard drive, and the 15.4in WUXGA LCD monitor and it is very fast. It is a little on the heavy side compared to some of the small models, but the screen is huge and has amazing resolution. I would certainly recommend it. With all of the rebates and specials, I only spent about 1100.

I bought an Inspiron 9300 with a $750 off coupon and it came out to $1450 SHIPPED.

Granted, its usually a $2200 Laptop, so its stacked with awesome stuff and specs, price was too good to pass up.

They have an offer still going and change the offer every week. You can get anywhere from $500 to $750 off certain models

I just got my 600M in the mail yesterday. It was the deal of the week last week, so I hope it all works out......

I got a 700M with the $750 off deal it cost me $950 after tax and shipping. I got a 1.6ghz pentium M, 60 gig hard drive, dvd burner, 512 Mb of Ram, the 8 cell battery, and 12.1 IN wide screen. It is great, tiny, and it is light. I find I can just slip it in my bag and the battery life is pretty good i get almost 6 hrs of battery life. I am glad I got this model.

I really didn't like my Dell Inspiron 2650. It was loud, battery life was horrible, heavy, and the worse was that the LCD monitor burned out this year so it's practically useless now after three years of use. If you want a laptop, I'd recommend an IBM. I really like mine.

Get a Dell latitude. I have had both and if you travel a lot the Inspirons while give you a lot of problems down the line. Not to mention the latitudes are very very light which is nice! The latitude is the corporate customers choice notebook. They are more expensive but well worth it if you like to tote your notebook around with you. I got a brand new Latitude D600 Pentium M 2.4Ghz 1 G Memory with wireless / ethernet / software and 1 year warranty for $1200 off of ebay. They run approx $2100 from Dell. If you aren't looking to spend as much, try the D505 or D400 series they are a little cheaper but definitely go latitude. If not, I would go HP over an Inspiron.

I have a 600m and love it. Consider getting a refurbish if cost is an issue.

The 700m's nice because it only weights about 5lbs, great for lugging around a med school campus. I used one of the Dell $750 coupons and got a 1024MB RAM, 1.8 GHz Pentium M, 80 Gig HD setup for only around 1250. Those coupons are always around somewhere, so search for them.

As it's been mentioned, wait for the $750 off sales (they tend to pop up every month) before buying a Dell. It's usually much cheaper even though they tend to take away bonus upgrades and/or raise the prices during the sale.

Check a bargain site like http://www.bensbargains.net

700m all the way... stylish... perfect size... and great performance. use the $750 coupon when it comes... pay no more than $900.. great deal for what you get.

the place to find good deals on Dell computers (among other things) is www.edealinfo.com i myself will be in the hunt soon!

I got an Inspiron 9300 stacked with every gucci plus-up on the list because I thought I wasn't going to get in and I would really have to do analytic design consulting full time. The work pays well, one 50 hour week paid for the laptop, and I needed screen space and speed to handle statistics (s-plus, spss, etc) and graphics (adobe creative suite, which won't even load without at least 358 MB of RAM). However, now I'm in at Tulane and I'm seriously wondering if I may need rotator cuff surgery after lugging this beast around for the next four years. I'm intensely visual, so I'm not sure I regret the big screen, but if you're not a visual learner I wouldn't recommend a 17" screen: it might cost you an arm. Literally.

I have a 700m and love it....It is small, lightweight and powerfull. The screen is also perfect for watching movies, it is very bright. If you are looking for something small this is the best deal you will find.

I just got the 6000 too. I love it. 1.6 Ghz Pentium M, 1Gb Ram, 60 gig hard drive, 15.4 inch screen, and CD/DVD burner. It is a bit heavier than other models and tends to have a lower battery life, but that can be corrected if you get the larger battery. A portable powerhouse for under $1400.

I personally got the 700m. I really like it, got it for 1150 shipped with that 750 off 1499 deal. Put MS Streets and Trips with GPS on it and it's awesome for road trips, or apartment hunting in a new city.

As for the dell 6000, in my opinion you could get a better and very much similar laptop for much cheaper - the HP zv6000. Before I decided on getting the 700m, I was just about ready to get the HP zv6000 (for me it was a no brainer between the HP and the Dell) but in the end I chose the 700m for it's size.

MY 6000 has 15.4 widescreen, 1.6 Pentium M, 512MB, 80GB, 64MB ATI, DVD/CD burner, wireless internet, and 1 year warrenty. Paid 1k. Good deal. I also have a dell desktop I've been using for 3 years. It's still working strong.

where do all of you get the $750 off coupon? Also, does the m700 work with wireless routers, or is an additional card needed?

go to slickdeals.net or bensbargain.com and when the deal come up, they'll post it. 700m will works with a wireless router. You can actually look at the specs at dell.com

I wouldn't recommend buy the laptops until the $750 off coupon is offered. otherwise, get a viao or an IBM

Mac Powerbook G4.

I got a dell laptop a few years ago and I highly recommend you DON'T GET ONE! There were about 10 different things that broke on it that had to be replaced, and they were'nt minor things. The screen blew out - had to get it replaced; dvd drive stopped working - never did fix it like it should be; the keyboard touchpad broke several times, I finally gave up on getting that fixed and just use a mouse now. If you do get a Dell, make sure you get the warranty they offer. I'm getting a toshiba next year.

Well, based on anecdotal evidence, three of my friends with Toshiba laptops all had them go in for major servicing as well: harddrive, optical drive, CPU, and keyboard replacements.

Figures. I'll make sure I get the heavy duty warranty with it then. 😀

The toughbooks are sweet (thin, 14" screen, 3lbs!), but so $$$. Can't even wait for deals on them because it's such a specialty item, no one carries them.

It was the #1 rated at notebook reviews http://www.notebookreview.com/price/default.asp?productFamilyID=394&display=priceDetail 😍

You should be fine. Any brand of laptop has a chance of failure and if you go looking you'll find someone who's had a bad experience with brand X, which is what I was trying to point out with my example.

I think the Dells are good values. If you're super concerned about reliability and more importantly how they support you if something fails, buy an IBM (business class machines and it really shows in their service) or ante up for the super-we-cover-any-damage-short-of-a-hammer-attack warranties everyone offers.

Personally, I'd just stick with a Dell with the regular warranty because even if it dies, you can replace it twice over for the price of a competitive model. But then I also tend to back up my data and an a reforming computer geek, so having to replace the comp isn't a big deal to me.
