Just out of curiosity....What do you think the best dental specialty is? I know that everyone has to find out what specialty they find most enjoyable, however I just want to know some other students opinions.

The best dental specialty is the one that makes the most money.

Asking pre-dents what specialty they like the most is comparable to asking kindergartners what they want to be when they grow up; they have ideas, but thy really have no clue

In my opinion, I want to be an Oral and Maxillofacial Dinosaur

      Thats rediculous. I acually LOLed at that one.

From what Ive seen so far OMFS is probably my favorite, but I havent had experience with a ton of specialties up close and personal. If I had to rank right now I would say OMFS>perio~Prostho>endo>ortho>pedo (just the big ones), just from my own superficial experience...but like armorshell said its like asking a little kid what he wants to do. I dont think you can truely know until you've been in school and gone through the different types of procedures and so on.

I just wanted an opinion, I know that none of us really know yet.

The best dental specialty will the one you will be going into. 😀 😀 😀

to sum up my choice,
periodontics #1

reasons: implants give you lots of money,
tissue graft, giving people permanent teeth seem very interesting

I hope to see the day where the need for allografts are replaced with biologic matrices infused with cheap effective growth factor products harvested from e. coli (Is that a run-on sentence 😕 )

I know a few general dentists who strickly do "Implant Dentistry", what benefits would someone get for going into Perio and doing implants instead of general dentistry?

they make the most money...more than ortho and oral max surgeon

Not really, especially when you consider the scope of practice for an oral surgeon includes almost everything a periodontist can do, plus additional procedures like orthagnathic surgery and extractions.

And orthodontists, well, orthodontists never run out of patients and a single one can see dozens of patients a day.

Perio is a fine specialty, but it's certainly not the most lucrative

how about the field that fits you the best? Everybody'll be doing fine financially. How about one that'll make you happiest in life? Pedo's great for those who love kids. GP's great for those who want to do it all. OMFS's great for those who love ...medicine?!?! Surgery's mostly full of simple procedures with little or no intellectual challenge, (Cut this, cut this, avoid cutting this, connect this) but it's risky and stressful.

imo, prostho is the most pain in the butt. when dealing with dentures, patients will complain of soreness and hypoguesia. sad stuff. rather give them implants.
