Hello Doctors,

I had a discussion with some of my students today as I noticed that some of them were using the ultrasonic periodontal scaler to remove stains, as I have told and warned them many times not to do so, because it can damage enamel, fracture/ destroy old restorations and cause post-op sensitivity and should only be used to remove calculus in fast, smooth swiping motions. My question is, what are the best methods to remove stains? And can you provide me with a link or reading material on that, thank you.🙂

Don't know about any reading material but I have a little trick so u can try. Mix prophy paste with a little bit of Tartar and stain remover liquid then polish( the one to clean dentures on ultrasonic), also u can rub the enamel surface with cotton pellets and the liquid... It taste nasty and irritates the gingival tissue a bit (nothing major or painful for the pt.) but it works!
