When is the best time to take a first anesthesiology elective if I want to see if I like it but also do reasonably well enough to apply with?

1. In April, right after Medicine and before Surgery.
2. In July/August, after Surgery, at a site that is not the main hospital, with less surgeries and no residents.
3. In September after Surgery and possibly a MICU or SICU rotation.

Thanks

I think it's helpful to take Medicine and Surgery prior to doing an anesthesiology rotation -- in fact, I believe that most away rotations in anesthesiology list Medicine/Surgery as prerequisites. I don't think that it's as critically important to do an ICU rotation prior to an anesthesiology rotation.

I know this is early, but I'd recommend to keep August / September open for away rotations -- I found VSAS to fill up pretty fast, and sometimes it can be hard to squeeze anesthesiology rotations in desirable locales [California] or concentrations [pain / regional] into your schedule.

I would do July at the place with no residents and after Med/Surg, so long as the word on the street is that the teaching is decent. I don't think one can fully appreciate anesthesiology as a specialty without a solid foundation of medical and surgical knowledge. I do think critical care is helpful as well, but not essential if it would push your start date for your rotation back to September. You should get all your ducks in a row prior to application season (September.) Good luck!
