hey all, for 2nd year classes which pharm book would you guys say is the best? and is this the same one you used for review? Ill be a second year and I like to understand things.. what do you all say is the concensus for pharm, which also turned out to be great for boards? thanks!

baby katzungs is great for class and for boards.

however, First Aid was plenty sufficient for my step 1 exam. A few of my buddies who took it agreed.

just make sure and annotate first aid heavily during the course.

the end of baby katzung's has a great rapid review of all the major drugs also.

later

I REALLY LOVE High-Yield Pharmacology. This book extracts out only the essentials for Step 1. Also, it helps you keep track of the important concepts for the courses.

I used Lippincott during the school year. It did a good job of explaining things and was pretty decent physio review at the same time. I used it to annotate FA and thats what I'm going off right now. For boards review it is definitely too much.

How's Rapid Review Pharm by Mosby? I heard a couple of upperclassman say good things about it as it was great review for the Pharm shelf.

Frankly, First Aid is perfectly fine for the boards.

Caution: You must memorize this section, however; it cannot be studied conceptually in the same way that physiology can be. For example, you have to KNOW the side effects of Loop vs. Thiazide diuretics (OH DANG vs. HyperGLUC) and know their effects on renal calcium handling.

I memorized every word of First Aid pharmacology and only had a question on ONE question.

Katzung's, hands down.

I bought Baby Katzung and used it maybe twice. I hated that book. I supplemented class transcripts with Lippincott. I also made notes on my pharm cards and I essentially memorized those cards. First Aid's pharm section was awesome for my pharm shelf exam prep.

Frank, It depends on which questions you get. I had First Aid Pharm memorized and used Pharmacology Recall to supplement. Yet there were still a couple questions where I had never even heard of the drugs. It happens to a lot of people. But it's not a big deal unless you absolutely must get every pharm question right. If that is your situation, I recommend studying pharm from the PDR.

katzung lange...the big one....just have to read it judiciously....

it will prevent u from doing lots?.. of memorizing. come boards time....****...skip all your second year classes and read the big texts....u'll learn a lot more.

lord knows reading robbins or emedicine at home was a lot more interesting than listening to some pathologist describe some inclusion body 🙄

That's funny. I had two questions on Step 1 about inclusion bodies.

Unfortunately the questions asked about the histology/chemistry of the inclusion bodies. Needless to say, I guessed on those two. 👎
