Hello there, I was wondering where is generally the best place to work at as a Pharmacist in terms of pay and benefits. I know a lot depends on the location and that not all stores will be the same, but generally speaking, what store do you think is the best to work at and why? Thank you in advance.

I also heard the people who work in hospitals are really happy with their jobs. But also heard it is hard to get in.

Everyone I know is considering anything other than retail.

FYI Walmart pharmacies do have a drive through. The target that's close to my house closes for one hour so that the pharmacist can have a lunch break.

I may not be a pharmacy student, yet. But I just finished up my clinical rotation for pharmacy technician school. I what I saw in home care pharmacy and hospital pharmacy was not pretty either those people were not very happy. I have a cousin that works at hospital and she doesn't like her job. In addition, she has worked at more than one hospital. I know of pharmacist that has work as a professor at major university for years, who has moved from one hospital job to another.

Get your facts straight.

I've had experience working for a Dominick's, Walgreens and an independent pharmacy. They're all very different atmospheres. Personally, I prefer the lower volume, slower paced stores. They provide a better opportunity to develop relationships with your patients if that's something you want to do. Some people I know choose companies like CVS because the ladder to move up is a lot larger. For example, CVS/Caremark has opportunities to work at their PBM or specialty pharmacy departments.

Everyone has a different preference. I would suggest talking to as many people that work for the different companies to get a grasp of what they do and if it's something you might like. Also, career fairs are a great opportunity to learn more about companies. Good luck.

Seriously...you don't know everything. Chill the muff out.

OP, it's really all going to depend on what you like. Don't look at it solely based on pay and benefits...realize that this a career, and probably what you'll be doing for a very long time. Whether it be a community position, or clinical, it doesn't really matter as long as you like your job. Chances are, you'll be paid quite a bit anyway...assuming there are jobs left by the time you graduate.

Play nice guys...no need to argue.

If you're doing Pharmacy for the $, then it's best for you not to go in this field. You must be passionate in what you love to do. There are so many professions out there with plenty of people competing for jobs. Just focus on what you love to do and worry about the other stuffs later.

I never once made the claim that I knew everything.

Well you see, the name "American Princess" probably had something to do with it.

You, as a "pre-pharmacy" (whatever that means) student, are not qualified to give such advice. The original question would be better answered by a pharmacist or pharmacy student which has completed a decent amount of IPPE/APPEs.

OK guys, keep in mind this question was asked in the prepharmacy forum, so of course most of the responses are going to come from the prepharmacy folks. Not to mention, you don't have to be a pharmacist to have something to contribute.

Not all Walmart pharmacies. I don't know of one near my house that has one, and I know of... 8?

This is going to depend heavily on the particular hospital, the job within that hospital, and the person. Completely subjective. I happen to know several very happy hospital pharmacists. Then again, I happen to know a few happy retail pharmacists - say it ain' so! The only thing everyone seems to agree with is that the electronic records management system at a particular hospital chain locally is a pain when it goes down, which seems to be more frequently lately.

Get your facts straight.

I think this is what most people are reacting to - it certainly jumped out at me. There is no "fact" about this. Anecdotal evidence is just that. Also, it's really hard to generalize from one hospital to all of them, across the USA, because they're just not the same.

I never once made the claim that I knew everything.

By jumping at other people and saying "get your facts straight" you really do imply that you know significantly more than everyone else. Just sayin'...it's not really productive or polite to do that.

The conclusions that I draw about hospital is from more than one hospital. I can think about at least five or more different hospital where I know several people did not like the people working at the hospital and moved to another hospital or went to teach classes in a pharmacy technician program.

Thank you for your understanding.

Have a blessed day.

To answer the OP,

If you are thinking the retail world, then IMHO, Costco. They have a mandatory lunch break during which the pharmacy closes (if there is only one pharmacist). The clientele is not terrible. The salary and compensation is pretty generous and it doesn't have the crazy volume of some other chain stores which can crank out 1000+ scripts in a day. Even their pay for pharmacy interns is pretty darn solid (15-25$/hr).

Just my 2 cents...

nor was this "you are not a pharmacist...not even in pharmacy school yet, don't know how you can answer this question "

I was going to put some input from my personal experience as well, I guess I will let the "more experience" do the talking.

The answer I would give is simply "wherever you find your best fit."

Even as retail stores can vary within a given chain, based on location and the staff, so can hospital pharmacies based on similar factors. You can work in what would otherwise be the BEST JOB IN DA WORLD, and it can be ruined by a bad staff that doesn't work well as a team.

I'm hoping to find a hospital job outside of school and work a side job in retail. It's hard to find your ideal job right out of school, but by keeping your eyes open you might navigate there soon after.

I wasn't the one who said that, but I can say that I disagree with what wassaid.

If you have an experience you want to share, you are more than welcome to do so. Everyone has something different to say, and all opinions should be valued. I personally just find it frustrating when people act like they know more than anyone else, or put down another person's response in a non-constructive and overly critical manner.

That being said, I'm sure the OP wouldn't mind hearing your opinion as well.
