By far it would be United States Podiatric School of Emphasized Sports Medicine (USPSESM) 👍

Sorry for the double posts. I am new to this forum.
KidsFeet, it sounds like you know so much. Any advice? I know that there isn't a specialty in sports medicine but do some of the nine podiatry schools offer more in the way of rotations, etc. Thanks

If OCPM joins Kent State there is supposed to be an opporunity to work with their sports teams at games and practices. Could be a good opportunity for sports med.

I'm of the mindset that the APMA as a whole is moving away from sports medicine. I think this is really illustrated by the new PM&S-36 requirements. I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this, but I think it was a trade-off they made when adopting the mandatory three year residency system. That's just my uninformed opinion though.

Not from personal experience but it seems any residency program that is affiliated with the armed forces potentially has good sports medicine exposure because of the military personnel that present to clinic with foot and ankle injuries/pain related to training. A few that come to mind are Womack/Eisenhower Medical Center at Fort Bragg, Madigan Army Medical Center in WA, and Kindred Hospital in Southern California. The Kindred Hospital residents supposedly go down to Camp Pendleton and treat active military down there.

I imagine if a pod residency has a good relationship with ortho and there is a sports medicine department at the hospital then you could have opportunity that way too. One such set-up that comes to mind is Ohio State University.

Dr Kevin Kirby is one of the leaders in podiatric biomechanics, has been running competitively throughout college in UCD, and I believe he also teaches biomechanics at the pod school in Oakland, California. I wonder if any members here can speak on that school's behalf if they get good sports med exposure there? I know being at Temple, there's a gait lab and an awesome sports med club that goes out and volunteers at many athletic events throughout the year where you actually practice a lot of sports med with Dr Palamarchuck (who was an olympic race walker once).

However, the previous posts are correct in that it really depends on where you get your residency. I was told by an attending that Dr Green from Scripps Mercy Kaiser in San Diego is THE MAN when it comes to biomechanics (which is near the new western school, so... think about that). Also, Swedish in seattle, Legacy in portland are big names when it comes to biomechanics. Residencies with sports med focus are more abundant in the west coast. However, residency directors look at how well you do in school and clinic, not which pod school you went to.

I think of all the podiatry schools, Barry emphasizes on sports medicine the most. Dr. James Losito is DPM who is part of the faculty at Barry and he is the primary podiatrist for the Miami Heats and the Gators. So Barry has a lot of resources and opportunity for students interested in sports medicine under podiatry. Hope this helps.
