I normally have a pretty good chairside manner (yes, I can hear the skepticism from some of you 😉), but I don't think I'll get much of a Professionalism grade if (when) I have to waste time with these people.

I had a patient claim to be allergic to glucose once. I didn't say anything to her but, "we won't give you any of that ma'am."

How did this loony think her brain stayed alive.

Not an allergy, but I did have one of those weird, columbine style kids tell me that he was addicted to Ibuprofen and had to go through rehab for it.

There are a LOT of weird people out there.

I had a lady who came into the geriatric/special care clinic during a rotation of mine holding a mask over her mouth and nose. She wanted new dentures, but claimed that she was allergic to breathing regular air and only pulled the mask away long enough to say a few words before covering up and taking a new breath.

Once she realized we couldn't make a denture if we couldn't get into her mouth for more than as long as she could hold her breath, she flew off the handle.

The best part was that when she went off arguing with us, she must've forgotten she was allergic to air--she was griping/crying/yelling at us for about 15 minutes straight...until she realized what she'd been doing and quickly put the mask back on. 🙂 Then she left.

Maybe she meant she was diabetic? 😕

I had a dirty little old man in a consult with his wife tell me that he was allergic to her! I said how so? He said (pointing down) that his "little thingy" starts to swell when she gets too close to him in bed. His wife was hard of hearing and said, "how could you be allergic to me, we've had 10 kids!"

Should've ordered intralesional steroids.

Also have to love the patients allergic to Tylenol, but have no problem taking Lortab/Vicodin...

My personal favorite:

Benadryl--gives me hives

I took care of a lady once who had a rash so she put on some benadryl ointment. The rash got worse so she put some more on. It got worse so her pharmacist told her to take some PO. She later came into the ER when the rash had spread over her entire body so the ER then gave her some (you guessed it) IV benadryl. Guess what, she was allergic to benadryl and unfortunately, even though you would have thought that she would have slept throughout the night, she was really annoying and wired.

I have had plenty of people tell me that they are allergic to Lortab but Vicodin is fine. I always love those ones. Or oxycontin but not percocet. Some people are just stupid.

What do you do with them? I haven't had any quality drug seekers yet, but I *know* I'm going to call them out point-blank when they do come.

It has always been easy for me because up until now I have been playing the role as an RN. Once I start prescribing I have a feeling it will be a little more difficult to let them know how I feel. Before I would just blame it on the doctors.
