It seems as if most of the seasoned attendings and residents wear the brand of scrubs- Fashion Seal. I don't know if these are provided by the hospitals or personally bought. Anyway does anyone know where these can be purchased online for the best price? Or if there is a better brand please comment...

Thanks,

BMW-

They're pretty good but they're also generally instutional scrubs (i.e. the hospital buys them). They can be bought from Moore Medical for about $12 per set but in the light blue only. These are what I used for anatomy and they held up quite well. My question is: what do you need them for? If it's to be on call or be in the OR, you should be able to use the hospital ones.

Actually since everyone is a comedian I like to sleep in mine with fuzzy slippers.......

At some of our core hospitals if we are on ER or Surg we have the option of wearing scrubs or professional attire. I don't know about you but I'm going to choose scrubs everytime especially at a trauma center. I have a few pairs but they are old and I am doing laundry like every 2 days so I dont' have to wear dirty ones!

Anyone else want to chime in.....

Yeah, the best scrubs are the free ones from the hospital. I see little need to purchase them unless you wanna pull a little "Dr. 90210" and have them embroidered and tailored.

So I'm still confused.

Are you implying that you DON'T have access to scrubs at the hospital? Usually students on such rotations are supplied with a few pairs which you can either wash at home or simply return and get another pair, having the hospital laundry do them.

Another issue is that some hospitals, especially on Surgical rotations, do not allow "outside scrubs" to be worn, particularly in the OR. You should check with your hospital's policy before purchasing some of your own.

Finally, Landau or Fashion Seal are common brands, but please check with your program and other students because it would be HIGHLY unusual IMHO that you have to purchase scrubs and most people do fine with the 3 or so pairs they give you during the rotation.

Although most rotations/hospitals supply scrubs, oddly it seems that both Emergency rotations that I'm doing (one in Phoenix and one in Denver) require that the student supplies his/her own scrubs. What is it with these cheap EM programs?

Yes I was referring more to my EM rotation which is now half over anyway. Just like Monkey the program I am at does not supply scrubs for the simple reason that they do not require it. They are optional so therefore you must purchase your own. I did not mean for this to turn into a lengthy waste of time for anyone I just wanted to know what are good scrubs to get and where to get them! I am only starting as a third year so I figured getting one more pair could not hurt with 2 years of rotations that are at numerous different hospitals with different policies. By the way I could not find that 12 dollar deal on moore medicals website. I think just the top was like 10 bucks. Thanks for everyones input.....

I like Dickies sandwashed scrubs; they're about $25-30 per set depending if you need tall size or not. The pants have two cargo pockets, a back pocket, and two hip pockets. They're a lot better for me than hospital scrubs where you just have one back pocket for your wallet and nothing else. The scrub shirt chest pocket is pretty worthless since anything in it just falls out whenever you lean over, so I like a fair amount of pants pockets for keys, phone, wallet, supplies (scissor, tape, etc), or pocket books.

Of course you still have to change into the house OR scrubs for surg rotations or call, but that's a given...

Thanks for the tip Feli. By the way the hospital I am at has Podiatry residents and I am learning a ton from them. Excellent residents 👍

It would be nice if someone designed a useful set of scrubs for the ED. My wishlist for such a uniform (obviously not suitable for hyperbaric chambers) would include:

1.a pocket holster for your stethoscope with a top loading pocket with a slit in it and a velcro loop for the earpiece (so you don't have to buy an uncomfortable clip that goes on the belt that half the time you forget anyways)

2.a leather or hard nylon slot on the pants with a velcro or button loop to put your trauma shears in so you don't have to have 'em on your belt and you don't risk bending or sitting on your trauma shears.

3.a neck guard/collar (like a half turtleneck collar)so that when it is hot your stethoscope doesn't rub against your neck and make it all sweaty

4. a pocket with a nylon/impermeable lining (biohazard grade) to put blood tubes in after you draw them in the trauma bay so that you don't have to hold tubes in your hand and piss off all the people in the chart writing area while walking to find a biohazard bag/and or a suitable place to put them,

(or a place to put surgilube packets and developer so that you are not worried it will spill or get all over the place...)

5. a sharps pocket/container so that you can have a scalpel on your person/ dispose of sharps if there is no sharps bin available

6. a set of loose roll up sleeves that button or velcro in position, so that when it is cold in your er and you want to go outside at 4 am to grab a sandwich or fresh air you don't freeze, or so you can choose your sleeve length hide your tats/psoriasis/sunburn if you want to

7.100% cotton not that cheap polyester stuff or at least something nicer than polyester.

8.a zipper for the guys so we can go to the toilet

9. pants pockets- for the front, back, and cargo pockets, at least some with zippers or velcro closures

10.pen pockets with liners so it doesn't leak ink

11. a zipping napoleon/ski pass pocket on the upper chest/arm to put stuff in you don't want falling out/money/coins

12. a velcro-on/off plastic ID slot so you can keep your ID badge clean/ slip it in to your uniform

13. hand pockets in the scrub top which are big enough to hold pda's/books.

14. a secure padded pocket for a PDA with zipper/velcro access

15. in my dream world--- a wireless speaker/microphone pocket/loop for a system which allows you to connect to the hospital telephone system so that you can answer those consult calls while you are in the middle of a procedure/with sterile gloves on/ etc.

16. in my dream world--- my own personal large glove dispenser so that I don't have to hunt all over the ED for a pair of large gloves.

17. a pocket and dispenser mechanism for alcohol based hand sanitizer.

18. a pocket big enough to keep a maglite in or a padded pocket to keep an ophthalmoscope in

I must say, Wal-Mart actually makes very nice scrubs which are fairly cheap ($20 a set). The best part is they seem to be tailored like actual clothes. The free ones often seem tailored to a T-rex, or like they were sewn flat with no conception that the person wearing them may just be in 3-D.

Look, God gave us scrub sets with 4 pockets, and decreed that we use them

AKA, use those inner shirt and pants pockets for stuff you need RARELY while wearing scrubs...like your wallet or cell phone. The way the pocket hangs in the shirt or pants prevents stuff from falling out. Problem solved.

i don't know of any other kind but free!

someone suggested earlier, allheart.com- they have a ton of different brands at different price points.
