Hey peeps. Was wondering what you all thought the best shoes were for the ED. I'm going to be an upcoming intern and the place where I'm doing my residency doesnt have too many sitting places for the residents and I plan on being on my feet all day anyways. I wore sneakers but they dont really seem to do it for me. Do you guys have any recommendations? I currently wear crocs (the cloth shoes) that are pretty much torn but have really been the best shoes i've owned. They look kind of immature on a doctor though imo but I would really appreciate some advice from you all. Best of luck to you all!

I've always been a fan of keen... closed toe, so meets OSHA guidelines.

Men's arroyo for me; most comfortable shoes I've ever owned.

Others in my shop swear by Dansko, once they're broken in.

I'm also an incoming intern, but I have been using Danskos for a little over a year, and I would say that they made a huge difference. You just need to get used to walking in them, as the mechanics are slightly different.

for some reason i go back to crocs every time. they are the only thing that keep my feet from hurting at the end of the day and the side vents keep my feet drier. i worry about the side vents letting some nasty liquid onto my socks but without them my feet would roast.

I'm on my third pair of Merrell Jungle Mocs... super comfy, great traction, stays on my feet better than clogs but still slip on

I go back and forth between favoring Danskos and Blundstones - both are comfortable and protect me from bodily fluids. Currently I've got some Achille's tendonitis so I just ordered a new pair of Danskos, as they keep my foot in plantarflexion.

Never had great luck with Danskos (great for standing, not so much for walking). Currently wearing Ecco's and have no complaints. Not sure I'd wear them if I was still working in a Level 1 Trauma center though.

I thought the crocs thing would be a good idea. I even got a free pair from EMRA. Figured they'd be good, because even if they were bled/shat/vomited upon, that I could hose them off and wipe them down with an antiviral wipe and be good to go.

My feet are in them right now. They're so damn hot and sweaty that I had to get rid of my socks. Good thing I'm 20 mins away from walking out the door.

I found the same problem with danskos. I changed the type of sock which helped a lot, but still a few issues when it's warmer / longer shifts.

That's why I got rid of my crocs... they're not bad if you get the vented versions, but then what's the point? d=)

I just got some merrill clogs that are really comfortable, but you have to order them a little bigger because of the back. I used to wear birkenstock clogs but I'd go through a pair every 6 months because the heel wears out so fast. Not much luck trying to wear danskos--painful and awkward for me, but everyone else seems to like them.

I gave up on the Danskos/Sanitas when I rolled my ankle three times in a week. I now mostly wear Merrell Jungle Mocs or Crocs. The Crocs are really comfortable and it's great that you can wash them in bleach. On the other hand whenever I look down and see them I recoil in horror and disbelief that I'm wearing something that ugly. Still open to better options, I guess.

I had the "vented" versions. I even took a👎 #11 blade and made "more" ventilation apertures in mine.

Screw that. Give me cotton.

"Ugly?" = get over it. You think that the surgeons give an eff about how they look ? Of course, they don't give an eff about anything (including patient care), but you get my point.

Anyone else a fan of just wearing a nice comfortable pair of Nike's?

Awesome. Simply awesome. d=)

... but seriously, here's what happened:

1.) I got a free pair of crocs via EMRA (thanks!)

2.) I started wearing them.

3.) My feet started sweating like crazy. And again, and again.

4.) I tried punching "more" ventilation holes in the damn'ed things.

5.) I got frustrated with the whole dig... seeing as how "a wall of rubber" was not feasibly "better" or "more breatheable" than "a wall of cotton"..

6.) I realized that "rubber" is.... well.... "rubber".

7.) Eff it. I went back to my cheap sneaks. Adios.

No. Because I don't like most Nike's, although the Free was a pretty good shoe.

I wear Vibram FiveFingers, Danskos, dress shoes, or boots, depending on what I'm wearing that day.
I rarely wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row.

Got the croc bistro because of the enclosed heel. It didn't come with vent holes so I cut them out as well:

No holes on top to avoid the liquids, and with a thin pair of socks they work great for me. All other shoes either make my feet hurt at the end of the day or leave my feet uber sweaty.

I just wear crappy brown dress shoes from payless. Any blood on them...gone. When they wear out in a couple of years I replace them for 30 bucks.

This thread has got me interested in the Merrell Jungle Mocs... do they run true to size? Is the Nubuck easy to clean, or are you going with leather since it'd be more water-resistant? I may order online if I can't find any in-store.

I currently wear Danskos or Ecco slip-ons in the hospital.

I have this exact pair ! I used an #11 blade to cut out the three 'ventilation' holes that you see in the picture, and they're still turbo-sweat-city, even with a thin pair of ankle-high socks.

I was reading in a Disney forum that people who love crocs but hate sweaty feet spray their feet with antiperspirant before going to Disney. They do it in order to be able to wear crocs all day without socks and not get sweaty feet. Hmmmm ...

No socks in the ED = crazy to begin with. Also, I have hairy insteps, which makes bare feet in crocs absolute murder by pulling on the hairs with every step. I could tolerate it for the 30 mins left in my shift that day, but no more.

Shaving insteps is not an option. That's also lunacy.

Dude, I didn't know that you were so hobbity.

The point being, I like the crocs well enough that I would spray then wear with socks in order to keep wearing them. Those open side vents still worry me, but when they were closed my feet were not comfy. With the vents open, they stay much drier.

Is this why you are the RustedFox?

Ha Ha ! - Well-given and well-deserved ribbing acknowledged ! This is why I love SDN.

I do love the crocs when it comes down to "comfort + spray and wipe when contaminated". Aesthetics, I don't care about whatsoever. Recommend a good foot spray to me, and I'm sold on your plan.

Also (for the record), I am a bizarrely-plumed creature. If you knew me in real life, you'd never expect it (as I'm not the hairiest of dudes, and my "facial hair" is laughable). However, those hairs on the tops of the feet are effing painful and I refuse to go barefoot and have them tugged on like that.

I also *need* to shave my chest, as there's nothing symmetric about it. A regular pattern of chest hair is fine in everybody's book, but I've got what looks to be the outline of Norway on my left pec major, and maybe the lesser antilles on my right. I'm not looking to navigate any waterways, so that **** gets shaved for the sake of uniformity.

Whoa! TMI there, Frodo. There must be a reasonable selection of anti-perspirant foot sprays in the Shire.

Not a big fan of the Dansko clogs, but they make many other footbed shapes that to me are more comfortable. I have three non-clog Dansko pairs that I wear to work, Dansko sandals for fun, Dansko dress shoes (that are AWESOME if you have to wear a suit but still need to walk around a lot). I checked out some less expensive brands, but I have a high instep, so if I bought a cheaper shoe with an expensive orthotic for arch support, I would be paying at least what Danskos cost.

Dropped by the "Puddifoot and Mogwort Compounding Apothecary". They say that they're fresh out of bollywog root spray, but that they'll get more in as soon as Aragorn takes care of that whole "Dwarven Mines Strike" thing.

Effing dwarves. Whatcha gonna do ?

I'm going I suggest gold bond foot powder. That stuff rocks. I prefer merrell or skechers since they actually fit my narrow feet well. For Skechers they absolutely need inserts.

Update: Tried out my replacement Danscos after being out of em for 6 months and realized that they're really tight across my dorsal midfoot. I remember my last pair being snug, but this pair is uncomfortable. My Achille's, on the other hand, feels great.

That's why I can't wear Danskos, I always roll my ankles.

If you roll your ankles enough it no longer hurts and swells. I was told by my podiatrist I had floppy ankles. I told them I liked my floppy ankles because I never hurt them. as in never had a sprained ankle since grade school / high school.

If Danskos are tight across the dorsal midfoot, try the next size up. I had the same problem with my first pair--person who sized me didn't know what she was doing, told me it would feel better with time. Next pair was a completely different story--got the next size up and was perfect. If Danskos are the right shoe for you and you are given the right size (enough room on the top of the foot and loose at the heel), they should feel awesome immediately.

I wear Alegria shoes. They are the only thing that saves my feet when I am on them for 12 hours a day. I also have plantar fasciitis and these shoes have practically made that disappear.
