Hi,

I'm currently working full-time and working on my science prereq's at our local community college. (Got a B.A. in an unrelated field about 8 years ago.) Since I won't be finished with Organic I until Christmas '04, I feel like I won't be prepared to take the DAT for another 12 months.

I'd like to find a good, widely-acceptable schedule that will give me an idea when I should be taking the DAT, sending in my AADSAS app, etc. I'm sending in my first-time membership to ASDA next week, and I understand they send along a predent guidebook. Should I just wait and look at that?

Thanks a bunch!

Keep searching this site. There's a lot of advice on this topic already out there. But basically take the DAT after you complete a year of chem, orgo, and bio

I was always told to take the DAT the spring of my junior year (generally by that time you should have all your requirements). Then start getting your letters of recommendation at the same time, because it takes a while for the teachers to write them. In the summer (May/June) i would begin to fill out my AADSAS application and write the personal statement. That way, when June 1st comes, you are ready to submit your application. It's much easier and less stressful if you get your application in early. It's not impossible to get in if you send it late, but sending it early is very beneficial. There are more spots open for you to compete for.

Good luck!!

to Brian:

Take the DAT whenever you feel ready. It's given several times over the course of a year. As long as you will have the results shortly after filing your AADSAS application, you are OK.

As far as applying to dental school goes: The best time to submit your AADSAS application is in late May/early June in the cycle (i.e. if you want to start dental school in September 2007, then you should apply in May/June 2006).

Get your recommendations straightened out ASAP. Best way to do it is if the college where you are taking classes has a preprofessional advising office-- Ask the preprofessional office to make a file for you and have your professors send the LORs directly to the preprofessional office. When time comes to apply to dental school, you tell the preprofessional office which schools to send the LORs to.

HTH.
