Ran through Chad's a couple times and still having difficulty with this particular subject.

Any suggestions on the best way to approach this tedious topic and the best resources to figure it out? Always had trouble with spec and NMR dating back to Orgo Lab.

For IR, I used this website to look up some common and simple molecules with particular functional groups and tried to recognize the specific functional groups I was looking for: http://riodb01.ibase.aist.go.jp/sdbs/cgi-bin/direct_frame_top.cgi

For NMR, I basically just memorized the rough locations of each type of H or C environment (alkane, alkene, carbonyl, etc.) on the graphs. Just remember that signals that are more downfield represent an H or C closer to electronegative atoms. It's important to remember what the splitting represents in H NMR (# neighbors + 1) and that the heights of the signals represent the ratio of H's for each H environment.

It's all just memorization and recognition. I wouldn't spend too much time on it though, just enough to be able to recognize functional groups and the concepts of splitting and signal height, since many people report having little to no questions involving the subject. Hope that helps

I just took the DAT a week ago there were no nmr/ ir spec questions but if there were to be one it would be super simple like, on the IR spec there was a signal at 1700 what functional group would that be? You'll be fine with just the basics

Solomons organic book, Odyssey, Destroyer and Wade. Those books have plenty of NMR and IR practide problems. Good luck.

Took DAT Aug. I didn't have anything on NMR/spec. If anything it was count the number of Carbon signals or something like that. I wouldn't go crazy with it at all.

I took it in August and had 2 NMR questions. You may get lucky but I'd look into it for sure. I didn't really know them, but they were fairly basic.
