I hear all these about how bad cali is for medical schools, and how competitive the process is in that state.. How is it in New York? I would think it's considerably better than Cali, but than I again this is just a guess. Any ideas on this?

ny is still hard just because there's so many applicants and not many public schools. easiest states are ones with the least population or with the most public med school like west virginia, vermont, north dakota, ohio, etc.

Whats the problem with Cali? I can assume its that there are only 5 states schools for a population of 55 million, and they are all highly competitive, but is there a reason beyond that?

Texas! Lots of med schools, lots of dumb people.

I kid, I kid. . .

Washington, California, and any state w/o a state school are the hardest. New York has a reputation for not being that hard to get into for state schools, but that's sort of bull**** because they only have four small state medical schools.

Easiest: Texas, Louisiana, Vermont

Texas is the best state to apply from. Lots of medical schools and a matching process that gives all applicants a good opportunity to get into med school somewhere 😀

The 51st state has less people than most real states yet more medical schools.

If you are a Texas resident. You can get into med school with a MCAT of 17L and a GPA of 2.3. Damn, I wish that state would secede from the union!

Ohio has 5 public MD schools, two of which are in the top 50. It also has one public DO school. There's also one private MD school in Ohio, which is top 25.

I like Michigan... only three instate MD, one instate DO, but two of the instate MDs have (reasonably) low averages and the third is amazing.

Pennsylvania has quite a few medical schools

Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University
Philadelphia, PA

Drexel University College of Medicine
Philadelphia, PA

Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine
Hershey, PA

Temple University School of Medicine
Philadelphia, PA

University of Pennsylvania Health System
Philadelphia, PA

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
Pittsburgh, PA

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine
Erie, PA

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Philadelphia, PA

I think Canadian schools are harder to get into than American medical schools in some cases. Their acceptance stats are pretty high

Florida isn't too bad though!

Alabama has a pretty sweet little deal, too. Both of their schools are in pretty nice locations, too.

Yeah, there are a lot of Canadians trying to get into american schools simply because the Canadian schools are far too competitive.

LOL. 17L/2.3 anywhere-- in your dreams.

Oh, And be able to say "yeee Haw" with your 17/2.3

I think your geography is bad, among other things. The Carribean is, well, in the Carribean.

Or are you speaking from personal experience on the 17/2.3 thing? Oh wait, or is it "one of your friends who you are posting for"

Texas, hand down. I think its because of the public school system. Drop out rates are high, and the competition in Texas colleges is not great. The applicant pool is smaller because of this. If Texas had public schools like Cali then it would be hard.

Hey, see you in a couple weeks. :meanie:

cali is the easiest...you just need a 4.0 and 45. now..who can't do that??? :meanie:

Pennsylvania has quite a few medical schools

But most of those give small or no preference to PA residents, and there's a big population, so it's actually one of the crappier states to apply from (relative to the ones that fill like 80% instate).

good point - i sit corrected

Too true, too true. This is just another reason why Pennsylvania doth suck. Of course, Rendell and his "pre-kindergarten" tax hikes would be another. 🙄

Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Alaska, Montana --- you're a shoo-in for UW -- great program, freakin awesome campus right on Lake Wa.

I second Alabama. If you're a strong applicant, you can feel confident in a UAB admission, and it is an amazing place.

NJ, the most densely populated state, has only 3 medical schools. and only 2 MD schools and 1 DO school. and they ALL start with the letters UMDNJ, AND the "in-state preference" numbers they give are largely skewed. Ok so what if UMDNJ retains funding by accepting 95% instate, because EVERYONE that gets into UMDNJ is "in-state" should they choose to matriculate. Its the easiest change of residency setup, all you need to do is sign a lease for an apt, or get a new DL... ok, thats actually quite difficult since getting anything done at the DMV takes forever, years of your life pass you by as you wait in line for 2 hours, only to be told to fill out a form and wait in another line for an hour, ultimately to be told to wait in the waiting room indefinitely till your name is called. oh and the seats in the waiting room are always full, so you have to stand in the intense heat, and the seats are uncomfortable, not that I know, because they're always full, but they look uncomfortable, just once I'd like to sit though, maybe. lets not get into how friendly the service is there.

and the best part is, telling people you're applying to UMDNJ, a typical response: why would you do that? UMD? what? isn't it going to be hard getting into Maryland out of state? why don't you look at med schools in NJ?

Illinois is not a bad state for in-state med school applicants.

Glad to be a Louisianian.....few applicants, many reserved spots for residents

I've heard that most Canadian medical schools are as hard to get into as Ivy's. I have heard a lot of people won't even bother applying in Canada even with good gpa's and mcat scores because you basically need a 3.9+ and killer mcat to even get interviewed. And forget it if you aren't Canadian or a permanent resident. Oh and Canada doesn't recalculate your American gpa on their grading scale so people with lower grade percentages will get in over you.

Not sure where you're going with this, honestly. California has some of the worst public schools in the nation. Yeah, spending is #2 in the country, but I just saw a list of standardized test scores, and Mississippi beat out California. I believe Texas was ranked around 20th, definitely in the upper half. That's the thing with CA: you have the best and the worst, and everyone is fighting over the primetime real estate.

Another nice thing about Texas schools is that they don't allow many people in from out of state. Lots of schools and lots of places reserved for Texas kids.
