Best Walking Cities Competition
APMA and Prevention magazine today announced the winners of the sixth annual Best Walking Cities Competition. There's a new twist to this year's announcement.
This year the winning cities list is expanded to include a best walking city in each state. APMA reviewed 501 US cities this year, comprised of 10 of the most populated cities from every state, including the District of Columbia, against 14 walking-conducive criteria. We even added a human element to this year's criteria with a panel of walking experts, from city planners to pedestrian advocates. The panel scored they felt to be the most walkable and accessible to businesses, housing, restaurants, and shops. To see listings of the Best Walking Cities in all states and for more information about the study, visit http://www.apma.org/walking.

This is a great opportunity for members, especially those located within these winning cities, to use the Best Walking Cities announcement as a catalyst to be featured in their local newspaper, television, and radio news stations, as well as participate in an organized, local walking event. Some suggested media tie-ins include how to select a great walking shoe, the important role walking plays in warding off systemic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, as well as how to get your feet in shape for a walking workout from tips on stretching to common foot ailments to watch out for if not done correctly. Jane Andersen, DPM, of Chapel Hill, NC, participated in a satellite media tour today with Prevention magazine to announce this years top 10 Best Walking Cities in the country. Among the 20 media spots were Denver, CO (KWGN CW); Philadelphia, PA (WBWB FM); Detroit, MI (WJBK FOX); Chicago, IL (WBBM AM); and Boston, MA (Boston Regional Cable).
