Best way to deal with internship as DO

For DOs applying to ACGME radiology programs, what do you think is the best way to deal with internship (assuming the 5-state AOA internship requirement is of concern - which it is to me)?

Will some ACGME programs accept AOA internships as PGY1? If so, I would think you couldn't rely on this since you wouldn't want to ask programs about it before the match.

The other alternative would be ranking ACGME PGY1's and hoping the AOA and the state board(s) approve them.

Lastly, scrambling into either an AOA internship if the rads program you match into approves it, or scrambling into an ACGME PGY1 if they will not.

My plan when I went through the match was to rank my ACGME rads programs in order of preference, then I made a supplemental rank order list with internships. For those ACGME programs that were in one of the 5 states, in my case I had a FL program and a PA program, I didn't include a supplemental internship rank list, and planned on just scrambling for a DO internship somewhere, because there are always open DO internships. I ended up matching to a California ACGME Rads program so it didn't matter, but I did my internship at an ACGME internship in which the internship paralleled the DO internship at the same hospital, and I didn't have any trouble getting my ACGME internship approved by the AOA.

I believe they do....you should just ask them. As long as you can get a license.

I heard from someone that asking programs before matching was a bad idea because it already makes it appear to be a potential problem/issue that they could just avoid by not ranking you.

It doesn't matter where you do internship. If you are in one of the 5 states, where an AOA approved internship is required, then you should probably do an AOA internship before your ACGME residency.

You have to be able to get a license, and it will be from the Osteopathic Medical Board of _____(whatever state you are in). I am in CA so it doesn't matter, but I got my ACGME Transitional Internship approved by the AOA in case I want to do Teleradiology and will need to get a license in other states.

The big thing is getting board certification by the American Board of Radiology, and according to them it doesn't matter. Check out the website for yourself.

Do you know if AOCR (American Osteopathic College of Radiology) is considered equivalent to ABR/ACR? (if you do a DO residency)

(nicedream) now that the DO match is over, have you heard any additional info about this issue? I purposefully went through the DO match and didn't match so I could scramble.

I will be going through the Allopathic match for Rads. I do plan on practicing and possibly even doing my residency in one of "the 5 states".

Have you found out if all Rads programs will accept a solely AOA approved internship? Will some? None?

The programs calling me to scramble say that they have students go from AOA internships to allo Rads programs, but I'm not 100% sure I believe them.

I also agree I don't want to call a program directly to ask and make myself look potentially worse.

Hopefully you have found out some additional info and are willing to share it.

I don't care if I can't get licensed in PA after I finish my residency (although I doubt it'd come to that because no matter what I'm going to apply for the "exception" article #whatever) and as far as my extensive research and understanding goes it doesn't matter.

As it is, I am bound by geography for my PGY-1 year and there are no DO internships within quite some distance from "my city". The AOA or states or whoever can kiss my @$$ if they think I'm going to be bullied by their internship rules... otherwise see ya in court...

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but in case anyone is trolling around...

This year, the AOA match has undergone some restructuring, and as far as I know it, matching for a preliminary rads internship (PGY-1) assures a PGY-2 radiology position. This way, there is no more sitting in internship wondering if you are going to match into rads or not...

That being said, I am still unsure on whether or not to withdraw from the AOA match in leu of matching in a stronger ACGME program. Hmmm...anyone in the same boat?

Whatever you do, do NOT pull out of the DO match. You should rank a program that you never even interviewed or sent an application to. That way you go unmatched in the DO match. When the time comes, you can "scramble" for free. I pulled out of the DO match and I had to pay money to send my application to osteopathic internships. If I had just stayed in, I could have applied for free after the match was over. It was a huge hassle. I had about 4-5 programs with internship year included for allo rads that I ranked, and matching for a DO internship would have eliminated my chances of matching into those programs. Just be honest with the PD's of the osteopathic internships, I had many promises of holding spots for me. I had many calling me match day to remind me that they were still interested if I did not match or needed an internship year. All were very thankful that I was honest with them.
