I have an interview at Georgetown in a few weeks and I'm trying to figure out the best way to get there. I've never been to D.C. or the surrounding area, so I'm unsure about my travel arrangements.

I'll be flying. Southwest would be the easiest airline for me to fly (and likely the cheapest).

Which airport would allow for the most convenient travel to the school or the surrounding area? Is there some sort of shuttle to the area, or would I have to take a cab?

Has anyone done the student host program? If so, would you recommend it?

Thanks in advance.

If you can stay with a student host, this is the best thing to do. Your student host can answer your questions and most students live within easy commute to the school.

All three airports are equally good and equally bad when it comes to DC. If I had to make a choice, I would choose to fly into BWI, rent a car and then drive into DC on the BW Parkway. Getting in and out of BWI is much easier than National or Dulles by rental car. If you take public transportation, National Airport is probably easier to get in and out of (see below).

If you fly into Dulles, there is a shuttle called the Washington Flyer that will take you either close to your hotel downtown or to National (Metro Stop). There is also a Metrobus that leaves from the West Falls Church Metro Station and goes straight to Dulles International. Go to the website http://www.wmata.com/. You can put in your starting point Dulles International Airport and your ending point (your hotel address) the date and time and they will give you a route with bus and rail or just bus. Every Metro train station has a cab stop.

If I were interviewing at Georgetown, I would stay in the Holiday Inn at Friendship Heights (Georgetown) Distance from airports below: You are about three blocks north of Reservoir Road. You go south on 35th St and make a right turn on Reservoir Rd. GT med school is about 4 blocks away. Short cab ride or the Holiday Inn shuttle can drop you off at GT hospital.

Below are the distances from the three airports (to the Georgetown Holiday INN) and the costs of public transportatation.

Reagan National (DCA)
Distance: 6 MI / 9.66 KM North East to Hotel
Shuttle Charge (one way): $14.00 (USD)
Taxi Charge (one way): $18.00 (USD)
Time by taxi: 15 minutes

Dulles International Airpot (IAD)
Distance: 25.33 MI / 40.76 KM East to Hotel
Shuttle Charge (one way): $28.00 (USD)
Taxi Charge (one way): $50.00 (USD)
Time by taxi: 40 minutes

Baltimore Washington Int'l (BWI)
Distance: 40 MI / 64.37 KM South West to Hotel
Shuttle Charge (one way): $40.00 (USD)
Taxi Charge (one way): $60.00 (USD)
Time by taxi: 60 minutes

Train
Station Name: Union Station
Distance: 3 MI / 4.83 KM North West to Hotel
Taxi Fee From Train Station: $10.00 (USD)

Subway Station Name: Foggy Bottom / GWU
Distance: 1.5 MI / 2.41 KM North West to Hotel
Complimentary Subway Station Shuttle
Taxi Fee From Subway Station: $8.00 (USD)

Complimentary Local Area Shuttle (This will take you to GT med school and pick you up if you call them).
Radius 2.0 MI

I hope that this helps. Congratulations on the interview.

just an fyi (i do not go to georgetown or live in dc, but go there often)-- if you like bar-b-q, i would highly recommend Old Glory. It is easy to find, near the corner of M street and 31 street. it is around 12 bucks for a meal, but really good, and lots of food.

Reagan National is the closest to Georgetown. It has a metro station (subway) that can take you into DC proper.

But there are no metro stops near Georgetown area. You can still of course take buses. But I don't know if you are up for the waiting and transfers after a long flight.

Your best cheap/easy bet is Supershuttle shared van. www.supershuttle.com I think it cost about $12 to get from the airport to georgetown area.

If you are staying with a student host near campus, definitely fly into Reagan National. The metro can take you into the city, to two or three separate locations which connect to the campus via a University shuttle. It will cost you probably 2 dollars, and it's fast also. 😛

hi.... my name is harish.. and i am from india... currently iam studying in final year mbbs.... i am very much interested in doing surgery in united states.... plz guide me through the way to fulfill my dreams....

Southwest flies to BWI and recently they started going to IAD.

However, if you're unfamiliar with the area, I say fly to DCA (Reagan National) and just pay for a cab to take you where you need to go.

DCA is 15 minutes away from Georgetown, IAD is about 40 minutes, and BWI is almost an hour away. And with taking the BW Parkway driving, you could get lost driving and end up in a dangerous part of DC.

By the way, Super Shuttle is not recommended whichever airport you take. It costs almost as much (or more!) than a cab, and it can take a LONG time. It cost me over $30 coming from BWI one time, and it took me almost 2 hours to get home, and that was NOT during rush hour.

Fly into Reagan (DCA) and take the metro......you want the Yellow line from Reagan to L'Enfant Plaza station, then you catch the Blue line to either Foggy Bottom or Farragut West station.....I think Foggy Bottom station is closer but don't hold me to that since it's been a couple of years since I've been to that part of DC (although I might be working at Georgetown here in a few weeks so then I will be able to definitely tell you for definite)

There are no metro stops near Georgetown; it's very secluded in a residential-y area. I would say your best bet is to fly into National and take a cab to wherever you're staying the night.

Don't fly into BWI! There's no reason! Every single nightmare travel experience I've had has been at that airport. Fly into National and then either take a cab or the metro blue line to Foggy Bottom. Foggy Bottom sits right under GW Hospital, and you could call a cab from there to take you to Georgetown (or walk, depending on what you feel up to, but it's a hike). I wouldn't suggest renting a car because there's no parking at Georgetown unless it's hopsital visitor which is really pricey.

Oh, and go to Pizzeria Paradiso down on P street if you get the chance. Fabulous 😛

Having interviewed at Georgetown and not being familiar previously with the area at all, I would recommend flying into DCA (National) and taking a cab (~$18). Stay with a student host if you can. My host lived 4 minutes (walking) to Georgetown and it was very convenient! 🙂
