I wanted to withdraw from a scheduled away elective that I have next year, but was wondering how it will affect my ranking. I have already done an away rotation at this institution and have an my interview there in two weeks. However, I just cannot afford it because my interview costs have drained my bank account. What is the best way to withdraw? Do I just do it via VSAS? Thanks in advance.

If you gave them enough advance notice (>30 days) like VSAS recommended, I don't think this should have any bearing on your ranking. However, if you wait until <30 days before you request to drop that's when things might get a little unpredictable, I think.

Call and explain asap. I think if you explain that you can't afford another elective (and you don't cancel your actual interview there) it shouldn't be an issue, provided you give them a month's notice.

Can an institution see the other electives you have scheduled on VSAS? I am applying to programs in a very limited area and would like to drop one VSAS elective (at a program I already did an away rotation at and that will likely rank#1 on NRMP) for another VSAS elective (at another institution in the area that I would like to see if I am interested in ranking). I obviously would be less interested in making this move if the program I really want to attend would know that I dropped their elective for a neighboring program elective......
